K. Hüsnü Can Başer; Betül Demirci; T. Özek; Emine Akalin; Neriman Özhatay

Twelve Ferulago (Apiaceae) species growing in Turkey, viz. F. asparagifolia Boiss., F. aucheri Boiss., F. confusa Velen., F. galbanifera (Miller) W. Koch., F. humilis Boiss., F. idaea N. Özhatay et E. Akalin, F. macrosciadia Boiss. et Bal., F. mughlae Pesmen, F. sandrasica Pesmen et Quezel., F. silaifolia (Boiss.) Boiss., F. sylvatica (Besser) Reichb., and F. trachycarpa Boiss. were investigated for their chemical compositions by using a new technique: microdistillation. Milligram quantities of dried materials were sufficient for characterizing the composition of the volatiles using a GC/MS system.

A karyomorphological study of the genus Allium (sect. Melanocrommyum) from Turkey

İlker Genç; Neriman Özhatay; Mehmet Cevri

This paper reports mitotic chromosome numbers of 19 taxa of Allium L. sect. Melanocrommyum Webb et Berthel. from Turkey. Karyotypes of 18 species of Allium sect. Melanocrommyum were diploid with 2n = 16, only A. cyrilli Ten. was tetraploid with 2n = 32. This study includes first reports for 11 Allium species (A. elmaliense İ. G. Deniz et Sümbül, A. lycaonicum Siehe ex Hayek, A. asclepiadeum Bornm., A. nemrutdaghense Kit Tan & Sorger, A. colchicifolium Boiss., A. shatakiense Rech. fil., A. woronowii Miscz., A. nabelekii Kamelin et Seisums, A. stenopetalum Boiss. et Kotschy, A. noëanum Reuter ex Regel, A. tubergenii Freyn). The chromosome count of A. orientale, collected from Turkey, is also reported for the first time in this study. Four accessions (A. nemrutdaghense, A. colchicifolium, A. chrysantherum, and A. cardiostemon) have B-chromosomes. Seven parameters for analyzing karyotype asymmetry were assessed and karyotypic ideograms of 19 taxa of Allium (sect. Melanocrommyum) are given. Microphotographs of somatic metaphases are also provided. All karyotypes are symmetrical, consisting of metacentric and submetacentric chromosome pairs. Only A. nabelekii and A. tubergenii have subtelocentric chromosomes. Karyotype analysis according to Stebbins categories placed chromosomes of studied taxa in symmetric class of 2A, indicating a symmetric karyotype. Only A. noëanum was classified in group 2B. Analysis of karyotype formulae showed that, in general, species of sect. Melanocrommyum form a homogeneous group.

Essential oil compositions and antioxidant potentials of fourteen ethanol (75%) root extracts prepared from twelve taxa of the genus Paeonia (Paeoniaceae), including P. arietina Anders., P. daurica Andrews, P. xkayae N. Özhatay, P. kesrouanensis Thiéb., P. mascula (L.) Miller subsp. arasicola G. Kaynak, ö. Yilmaz & R. Daşkin, P. mascula (L.) Miller subsp. bodurii N. Özhatay, P. cf. mascula L. (Mill.) subsp. mascula (two samples from central and northeastern Anatolia), P. cf. officinalis Retz., P. peregrina Miller (two samples from western and northwestern Anatolia), P. tenuifolia L., P. turcica Davis & Cullen, and P. wittmanniana Hartwiss ex Lindl. were assessed. The chromosome numbers of the root tips of the species were examined using chromosome staining technique with Shiff’s reagent under Leitz microscope. The essential oils of the roots of the Paeonia species were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and the major components were identified as salicylaldehyde (10%–94.4%), cis-myrtanal (5.5%–59.7%), and methyl salicylate (2%–52.2%). Antioxidant potentials were tested against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and nitric oxide (NO) radicals using propyl gallate and rutin as the references. Total phenolic contents of the ethanol extracts were determined using Folin-Ciocalteau’s method. The extracts exerted moderate NO scavenger effect and displayed insignificant DPPH radical scavenger activity at 500 μg mL−1. On the other hand, P. daurica, P. tenuifolia and P. cf. mascula subsp. mascula are diploids with 2n = 10, while other nine taxa are tetraploids with 2n = 20.

Allium serpentinicum and A. kandemirii (Alliaceae), Two New Species from East Anatolia, Turkey

İlker Genç; Neriman Özhatay

Allium serpentinicum İ. Genç & N. Özhatay and A. kandemirii İ Genç & N. Özhatay (sect. Melanocrommyum) are described and illustrated as new species from East Anatolia, Turkey. The morphological characters of these taxa are discussed and the distributions of the taxa are mapped. The diploid chromosome numbers are: A. serpentinicum 2n = 16, 32; A. kandemirii 2n = 16.

K. H.C. Baser; Betül Demirci; Emine Akalin; Neriman Özhatay

Abstract A hydrodistilled essential oil from fruits of Cachrys alpina was analyzed by GC/MS. Twenty-nine compounds representing 98% of the oil were identified with α-humulene (33.1%), p-cymene (9.3%), α-phellandrene (9.1%), germacrene D (8.2%) and α-pinene (6.3%) as main constituents.
