A novel alternative to the additives in investment casting pattern wax compositions

Senay Taşcıoğlu; Neşet Akar

Abstract In this research, modifying effects of some soybeans on the properties of an investment casting sprue wax (B97) have been studied. For this purpose, soybeans of Wilken-3480, NS-6, RHS-6592 and SGI-3308 varieties have been used as the additives. The effects of these soybeans on the surface roughness, solidification shrinkage, viscosity, hardness, tensile strength and wettability of B97 have been investigated. It has been conclusively shown that these soybeans improve the properties of B97 to such an extent that it converts into a pattern wax having properties superior to those of a commercial investment casting pattern wax (B140).

Conversion of an Investment Casting Sprue Wax to a Pattern Wax by Chemical Agents

Senay Taşcıoğlu; Neşet Akar

Abstract In this research, the properties of a commercial investment casting sprue wax (B97) were modified to improve its properties so it can be used as a pattern wax in investment casting. For this purpose, some colloids (gum arabic, pectin, agar, polyvinylpyrrolidone-40, polyvinylpolypyrrolidone, alginic acid, cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, silicon, tannic acid, saponin), some surface active agents (sodium dodecyl sulfate, sorbitane oleostearate, glycerine), and activated charcoal and palmitic acid were used as additives or fillers. The effect of these chemicals on the surface roughness, solidification shrinkage, apparent viscosity, hardness, tensile strength, and wettability of B97 wax were investigated. These additives modified the properties of B97 sprue wax to such an extent that it had properties superior to those of a commercial investment casting pattern wax (B140).

Abstract Tensile fracture behaviors of thixocast, artificially aged thixocast (thixocast+T6) and as-extruded AA7075 alloys were investigated. The microstructural and fractographic observations were carried out using optical microscope (OM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Experimental studies showed that as-extruded and thixocast+T6 specimens exhibited considerably more excellent mechanical properties than as-thixocast AA7075 specimen. T6 artificial heat treatment with prolonged solution treatment significantly improved the tensile properties of the thixocast AA7075 alloy. The tensile properties of as-extruded and thixocast+T6 specimens were close to each other. In as-thixocast specimen having remarkable micro-cracks, fracture was intergranular brittle type. The ductile fracture surfaces were observed in as-extruded and thixocast+T6 specimens. In as-thixocast specimens, decohesion started between the eutectic–matrix interfaces and propagated through grains. Micro-void coalescence was the dominant form of fracture in thixocast+T6 heat treated specimens. The micro-voids nucleation was initiated at the interface between the matrix and multinary eutectic structure.

In this article, the interfacial heat transfer coefficient (IHTC) is investigated as a function of superheat temperatures (100°C, 150°C, and 200°C) and casting heights (100, 150, and 200 mm). The experiments were conducted for a liquid alloy (Al-Si 12.9%) on water-cooled copper chill during vertically upward solidification of a eutectic Al-Si alloy casting. A finite difference method (FDM) is applied for the numerical used for solution of inverse heat conduction problem (IHCP), the so-called Becks method. Computer-guided thermocouples were connected with the chill and casting, at six positions and the time-temperature data were recorded automatically. As the lateral surfaces are very well heat isolated, the unidirectional solidification process started vertically upward at the interface surface. The measured time-temperature data files were used by FDM using explicit technique. The experimental and calculated temperatures have shown excellent agreement. The IHTC increases as superheat temperatures increases. However, the casting height (100, 150, and 200 mm) has no significant effect on the IHTC. It changed only maximum peak values of the IHTC and increased air gap formation time with increasing casting height.

Abstract In this study, the effects of injection velocity on tensile properties and hardness of A357 aluminum alloy produced by thixocasting process were investigated. For this purpose, feedstock produced by cooling slope process were first held at reheating temperature of 572 °C and then formed at injection velocities of 1, 1.5, 2 and 2.37 m × s−1, respectively. In order to make comparisons, other specimens were produced by high pressure die casting method via melted metal at the casting temperature of 630 °C using same injection velocities. Tensile test and hardness measurements were conducted for all specimens. The best tensile test properties were obtained for the specimens produced by thixocasting process at injection velocity of 2.37 m × s−1. For this specimens, the values of 0.2 % proof strength, tensile strength and total elongation were obtained as 89.9 MPa, 237.3 MPa and 20.7 %, respectively. Furthermore, its hardness were measured as 74 HV.
