Data Acquisition for Hydrometeorological Monitoring

Mauricio Orozco-Alzate; Jorge Julián Vélez-Upegui; Néstor Darío Duque-Méndez

Meteorology-the study of atmosphere and its phenomena-dates back to Aristotle and his seminal book Meteorologica (circa 340 B.C.). Even though his philosophy relied on physical observations, he lacked weather instruments and, as a result, his explanations of atmospheric phenomena were speculative. It was only until the availability of instrumentation that meteorology turned genuinely experimental and, therefore, became a modern science.

Multi-agents for Simulate Preferences of Students in LO Selection.

Luís Felipe Londoño; Néstor Darío Duque-Méndez; Valentina Tabares-Morales

The selection of educational material that allows to address the diversity of students in the class-room is a problem faced by teachers in their daily work. The difficulty increases as you wish to attend to a greater number of traits in the trainees, for example, their predominant learning styles and their conditions of disability, to cite some cases. A valid alternative to include different profiles of students and to evaluate the type of materials available is to simulate students with different characteristics and evaluate the relevance of available educational resources. This article presents an interactive tool that supports the teacher in this task, simulating the behavior of students through agents, providing each one with different learning styles and special education needs related to any disability condition. The multi-agent system recommends learning objects (LO) stored in a repository, according to the preferences of agents, which were guide by rules defined according to their characteristics and associated with the metadata of the resources. The appropriate materials are chosen for all students selected by the teacher.

Camilo A. CastilloBenavides; Luís F. GarcíaArias; Néstor Darío Duque-Méndez; Demetrio Arturo Ovalle-Carranza

The correct application of ICTs (information and communications technologies) to the education of people with physical disabilities requires studies aimed to adapt interfaces. Controlling the design and implementation of input devices would contribute to develop interfaces tailored to the requirements of such context. The purpose of this work is to present the development and validation of the IMU-Mouse pointer device whose design and implementation is controlled—for researching interfaces that make the most of the interaction capabilities of the devices in adaptation processes. The purpose of the device is to address the needs created by physical disability in upper limps; hence it operates with head movements. Both actions of the IMU-Mouse, click and move, are performed by processing the data generated by an accelerometer and a gyroscope. The main interaction features of the IMU-Mouse were assessed by group of 13 people by means of a survey based on Annex C of ISO 9241-9 standard. The results lead to conclude that the device enables an effective interaction with the computer, as well as the identification of spaces for the application of hardware and software add-ons to support interaction.

Big Data has become a worldwide trend and although still lacks a scientific or academic consensual concept, every day it portends greater market growth that surrounds and the associated research areas. This paper reports a systematic review of the literature on Big Data considering a state of the art about techniques and technologies associated with Big Data, which include capture, processing, analysis and data visualization. The characteristics, strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for some applications and Big Data models that include support mainly for modeling, analysis, and data mining are explored. Likewise, some of the future trends for the development of Big Data are introduced by basic aspects, scope, and importance of each one. The methodology used for exploration involves the application of two strategies, the first corresponds to a scientometric analysis and the second corresponds to a categorization of documents through a web tool to support the process of literature review. As results, a summary and conclusions about the subject are generated and possible scenarios arise for research work in the field.

Construction of learning objects with Augmented Reality: An experience in secondary education

Emilcy Juliana Hernandez-Leal; Néstor Darío Duque-Méndez; Mauricio Giraldo Ocampo; Paula Andrea Rodríguez Marín

One of the technologies that has been showing possibilities of application in educational environments is the Augmented Reality (AR), in addition to its application to other fields such as tourism, advertising, video games, among others. The present article shows the results of an experiment carried out at the National University of Colombia, with the design and construction of augmented learning objects for the seventh and eighth grades of secondary education, which were tested and evaluated by students of a school in the department of Caldas. The study confirms the potential of this technology to support educational processes represented in the creation of digital resources for mobile devices. The development of learning objects in AR for mobile devices can support teachers in the integration of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the teaching-learning processes.
