Awareness, Perceptions, and Expectations of Academic Librarians in Turkey about Resource Description and Access (RDA)

Resource Description and Access (RDA), as a new cataloging standard, supports libraries in their bibliographic description processes by increasing access points. The increasing importance of RDA implementation requires adaptation to a new bibliographic universe. Furthermore, many initiatives have been launched by countries who would like to keep themselves up-to-date by using and implementing RDA in their library catalogs. This study points out the awareness and expectations of catalogers in academic libraries in Turkey about the transition from Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, Second Edition (AACR2) to RDA and their potential problems in adapting RDA. The situation in Turkey in terms of academic libraries is evaluated and reported.

Üniversite Öğrencilerinin Bilgi Okuryazarlığı Becerilerinin Değerlendirilmesi: Ankara Üniversitesi Örneği

Information literacy skills are extremely important for students at universities to keep up with technological innovations and changes, manage the research process effectively and become lifelong learners in the future. Today, people are supposed to be information literate and in this context they are expected to be able to define their information needs, access and evaluate the information resources, construct the new information onto their present knowledge, use the information accordingly and ethically and transmit/present the information. There is a significant contribution of educational activities organized by libraries to equip students with these skills. In this study, it is aimed to determine information literacy skills of undergraduate students at Ankara University in the process of searching, accessing, assessing, using, transmitting/presenting information. The descriptive method has been used and the research has been performed on a sample consisting of 245 undergraduate students selected through stratified random sampling from the universe of 39.136 students. The results have been analyzed through PASW (Predictive Analytics SoftWare). The result of the study indicates that the students encounter difficulties in the subjects which require advanced and more detailed information, they have not received any training for information literacy skills yet and thus they require educational activities which will be organized in this regard.

Araştırma Görevlilerinin Bilgi Okuryazarlığı Becerileri ve Eğitim Gereksinimleri: Ankara Üniversitesi Örneği

The continuous development in information and communication technologies has directly affected the environment for acquisition of information and learning as well as reshaping the structure of this environment. Thus the resources, tools, applications and services applied in this environment have also changed and they have been digitally presented. These innovations have made individuals adapt to the new environments in the context of lifelong learning. In other words, it becomes necessary for people to be equipped with “information literacy skills” including “defining the information needs”, “effective access to information”, “assessment of information”, “use of information” and “ transmission and presentation of information” which are indispensable parts of information age. There are significant contributions of educational activities organized by libraries in providing individuals with these skills. In this study, it is aimed to determine library usage of the research assistants at Ankara University, their levels of information literacy skills in the scope of information and communication technologies and identify their educational expectations concerning these issues. This research has been done with 556 participants among 1028 research assistants who have been anticipated to be involved. The descriptive method and a survey as a data collection technique have been used. The results have been analyzed through PASW (Predictive Analytics SoftWare). The results show that the research assistants at Ankara University have difficulty in all stages of research process and they require educational activities on information literacy prepared by libraries.

Bilginin Düzenlenmesine Yönelik Yeni Bir Standart: Resource Description and Access (RDA)

Bilgi kaynaklarinin duzenlenmesi ve erisime sunulmasina yonelik olarak gelistirilen ve Anglo-Amerikan Kataloglama Kurallari 2 (Anglo-American Cataloging Rules 2 - AACR2)’nin yerini alan yeni kataloglama standardi RDA, kataloglama kurallarinin kullanimini ve yorumlanmasini kolaylastirmayi, tum bilgi ortamlari icin bibliyografik denetimi etkili bir sekilde saglamayi, bilgi kaynaklari arasinda hiyerarsik ve mantiksal iliskileri kurmayi, kutuphane verilerini farkli kaynaklardaki verilerle butunlestirmeyi ve bilgi kaynaklarina erisim icin islevsel bir yapi sunmayi hedeflemektedir. Bu hedefler dogrultusunda RDA, bibliyografik evrenin yeniden ve daha etkin bicimde duzenlenmesini amaclamaktadir. Bu calismada RDA’nin bu hedef ve amaclarina yonelik olarak ortaya koydugu yeni yaklasimlar, yapi, terminoloji, kurallar, uygulamalar ve unsurlar literature dayali olarak aciklanmakta, dunyada ve Turkiye’de RDA’ya yonelik olarak gerceklestirilen calismalar ele alinmaktadir.
