The Mix Fleet Vehicle Routing Problem (MFVRP) involves the design of a set of minimum cost routes, originating and terminating at a central depot, for a fleet of heterogeneous vehicles with various capacities, fixed costs and variable costs to service a set of customers with known demands. This paper develops new variants of a tabu search meta-heuristic for the MFVRP. These variants use a mix of different components, including reactive tabu search concepts; variable neighbourhoods, special data memory structures and hashing functions. The reactive concept is used in a new way to trigger the switch between simple moves for intensification and more complex ones for diversification of the search strategies. The special data structures are newly introduced to efficiently search the various neighbourhood spaces. The combination of data structures and strategic balance between intensification and diversification generates an efficient and robust implementation, which is very competitive with other algorithms in the literature on a set of benchmark instances for which some new best-known solutions are provided.

Abstract The vehicle routing problem with pickups and deliveries (VRPPD) extends the vehicle routing problem (VRP) by allowing customers to both send and receive goods. The main difficulty of the problem is that the load of vehicles is fluctuating rather than decreasing as in the VRP. We design a reactive tabu search metaheuristic that can check feasibility of proposed moves quickly and reacts to repetitions to guide the search. Several new best solutions are found for benchmark problems.

The heterogeneous fleet vehicle routing problem is investigated using some adaptations of the variable neighborhood search (VNS). The initial solution is obtained by Dijkstras algorithm based on a cost network constructed by the sweep algorithm and the 2-opt. Our VNS algorithm uses several neighborhoods which are adapted for this problem. In addition, a number of local search methods together with a diversification procedure are used. Two VNS variants, which differ in the order the diversification and Dijkstras algorithm are used, are implemented. Both variants appear to be competitive and produce new best results when tested on the data sets from the literature. We also constructed larger data sets for which benchmarking results are provided for future comparison.

The multi-depot fleet size and mix vehicle routing problem, also known as the multi-depot routing with heterogeneous vehicles, is investigated. A mathematical formulation is given and lower as well as upper bounds are produced using a three hour execution time of CPLEX. An efficient implementation of variable neighborhood search that incorporates new features in addition to the adaptation of several existing neighborhoods and local search operators is proposed. These features include a preprocessing scheme for identifying borderline customers, a mechanism that aggregates and disaggregates routes between depots, and a neighborhood reduction test that saves nearly 80% of the CPU time, especially on the large instances. The proposed algorithm is highly competitive as it produces 23 new best results when tested on the 26 data instances published in the literature.

A heuristic approach based on a hybrid operation of reactive tabu search (RTS) and adaptive memory programming (AMP) is proposed to solve the vehicle routing problem with backhauls (VRPB). The RTS is used with an escape mechanism which manipulates different neighbourhood schemes in a sophisticated way in order to get a continuously balanced intensification and diversification during the search process. The adaptive memory strategy takes the search back to the unexplored regions of the search space by maintaining a set of elite solutions and using them strategically with the RTS. The AMP feature brings an extra robustness to the search process that resulted in early convergence when tested on most of the VRPB instances. We compare our algorithm against the best methods in the literature and report new best solutions for several benchmark problems.

The classical vehicle routing problem (VRP) involves determining a fleet of homogeneous size vehicles and designing an associated set of routes that minimizes the total cost. Our tabu search (TS) algorithm to solve the VRP is based on reactive tabu search (RTS) with a new escape mechanism, which manipulates different neighbourhood schemes in a very sophisticated way in order to get a balanced intensification and diversification continuously during the search process. We compare our algorithm with the best methods in the literature using different data sets and report results including new best known solutions for several well-known benchmark problems.

Purpose – Most collaborative SCM research has focused on the ideal situation of a manufacturer engaging with all its downstream partners. In view of extensive entry costs, lack of trust or simply non‐suitability of electronic data processing systems this, however, provides only limited support to actual problems of many companies. Purpose – This paper sets out to investigate the impact of various supply chain advancements within a perishable goods environment.Design/methodology/approach – The study uses discrete event simulation to evaluate diverse adjustments within the distribution framework of a food manufacturer and their major customers. Analysed aspects include level of safety inventory held, inventory issuing, replenishment and through‐put policies and increased demand transparency due to collaboration between manufacturer and various retailers. The importance and the impact of these factors are investigated using a wide variety of performance measures.Findings – Several promising practice designs are generated and recommended for implementation to improve the experienced shortcomings. The vehicle routing problem with deliveries and pickups is a challenging extension to the vehicle routing problem that lately attracted growing attention in the literature. This paper investigates the relationship between two versions of this problem, called “mixed” and “simultaneous”. In particular, we wish to know whether a solution algorithm designed for the simultaneous case can solve the mixed case. To this end, we implement a metaheuristic based on reactive tabu search. The results suggest that this approach can yield good results.

The vehicle routing problem with divisible deliveries and pickups is a new and interesting model within reverse logistics. Each customer may have a pickup and delivery demand that have to be served with capacitated vehicles. The pickup and the delivery quantities may be served, if beneficial, in two separate visits. The model is placed in the context of other delivery and pickup problems and formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming problem. In this paper, we study the savings that can be achieved by allowing the pickup and delivery quantities to be served separately with respect to the case where the quantities have to be served simultaneously. Both exact and heuristic results are analysed in depth for a better understanding of the problem structure and an average estimation of the savings due to the possibility of serving pickup and delivery quantities separately.
