Ruthenium Carbonyl Complexes of N-Heterocyclic Molecules. Part 2. Preparation, Protonation and Decarbonylation Reactions of Complexes with a Bidentate Terpyridyl Ligand. Structure of [Ru(CO)2(phen)(tpyH)](BF4)3

Nicholas C. Thomas; Jean Fischer

Abstract The complexes Ru(CO)2(CF3SO3)2(bidentate) {bidentate = 2,2′-bipyridyI (bpy) or 1,10-phenanthroline (phen)} react with 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridyl (tpy) forming octahedral [Ru(CO)2(bidentate)(tpy)]2 + compounds (II) which contain a bidentate tpy. Complex II (bidentate = phen) can be protonated to give [Ru(CO)2-(phen)(tpyH)](BF4)3, the structure of which has been established by X-ray crystallography. Treatment of II with trimethylamine N-oxide in methanol at room temperature gives the monocarbonyl compounds [Ru(CO)(bidentate)(tpy)]2+ (IV) which contain a tridentate tpy. Complex IV is also obtained by photolysis of II.

Ruthenium carbonyl complexes of N-heterocyclic molecules Part 3. Synthesis of ruthenium complexes of the ambidentate ligand 4-amino-3,5-bis(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole (APT). X-ray crystal structures of two coordination isomers of Ru(CO)2Cl2(APT)

Arnold L. Rheingold; Patsy Saisuwan; Nicholas C. Thomas

Abstract 4-Amino-3,5-bis(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole (APT), a poly- and ambidentate ligand, forms two bidentate coordination isomers of Ru(CO) 2 Cl 2 , which in one case is coordinated to a pyridyl ring and an adjacent triazole ring ( A ), and in the other case to a pyridyl ring and the amino nitrogen atom ( B ). Both isomers of Ru(CO) 2 Cl 2 (APT) have been crystallographically characterized: A , orange, orthorhombic, Pbca , a =15.332(4), b =17.715(4), c =13.083(4) A, R ( F )=3.26%; B (MeOH), yellow, triclinic, P 1 , a =8.712(2), b =9.492(2), c =12.142(2) A, α=86.03(2), β=82.63(2), γ=74.21(2)°, R ( F )=3.49%. The complexes are formed directly from the reaction of [Ru(CO) 2 Cl 2 ] n with APT in boiling MeOH. In a similar reaction with Re(CO) 5 Cl, Re(CO) 3 Cl(APT) is formed. The Br analogue of the Ru complex forms predominantly the yellow isomer ( B ), while the I analogue crystallizes only as the orange isomer ( A ). Based on NMR data, the Re complex most likely coordinates via the A mode.

Synthesis of monometallic and bimetallic 2,2′-bipyrimidine and 2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine complexes of ruthenium, platinum and palladium

Nicholas C. Thomas; Jerry Cox

Abstract The reaction of 2,2′-bipyrimidine (bpym) or 2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine (dpp) with [Ru(CO) 2 Cl 2 ] n gives the monometallic Ru(CO) 2 Cl 2 (bidentate) (bidentate = bpym or dpp) complexes. The Ru(CO) 2 Cl 2 (bidentate) complexes react further with [Ru(CO) 2 Cl 2 ] n or with MCl 2 (dmso) 2 (M = Pt, Pd) to yield the homobimetallic Cl 2 (CO) 2 Ru(bidentate) Ru(CO) 2 Cl 2 or heterobimetallic C1 2 M(bidentate)Ru(CO) 2 C1 2 complexes, respectively. The complexes have been characterized by microanalysis and electronic absorption and IR spectroscopy.

Synthesis of Ruthenium(II) Carbonyl Chloride Complexes Containing N-Donor Bidentate Ligands

Nicholas C. Thomas; Glen B. Deacon

Abstract A series of new Ru(CO)2Cl2L compounds (L=bidentate N-donor ligand) have been prepared by the reaction of [Ru(CO)2Cl2]n with L in methanol. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, conductivity measurements and spectroscopic data and have trans-chlorines and cis-carbonyl ligands.
