A Psychoeducational Curriculum Approach to Teaching Self-Control.

For the past 10 years we have been striving for ways to prevent and reduce emotional and behavioral disorders in schools. Like many others, we have been concerned about the persisting, inflexible, and generalized nature of problem behavior. We are now convinced that a cr i t ical measure of educat ional accompl ishment is our col lect ive abi l i ty to foster sel f -control in chi ldren. This art ic le presents an approach to developing ski l ls for sel f -control . Our main premise is that the concept of self-control provides a positive alternative to behavioral or emot ional d isorder, one which can be translated into direct c lassroom instruct ion for preventive and remedial purposes.
