A Collaborative System for Environment and Tourism Information Authoring and Web Publishing: An Institutional Case Study

Information intensive activities are usually carried out by heterogeneous work groups: collaboration is needed to reach a common goal that stems from different individual tasks such as data harvesting, aggregation and presentation, dealing with a large amount of highly fragmented information that could overload the working procedure nowadays adopted. Furthermore, the persons involved in such activities often operate from remote locations and in different times and are characterized by different skills and cultures. This requires that the workflow of the complete information cycle should be analysed to design the complex information system which can effectively support the diversified tasks fitting the requirements and habits of all the operators. A complex system can nowadays be developed by integrating already available components and by making them inter-operable. Environment heritage conservation and tourism promotion refer to a complex production chain where private companies and public institutions are involved with specific interests and skills. A relevant amount of the information needed and produced by their activities are referred to the territory, therefore is represented as geo-referenced data.

An intelligent assistant for building inspection

This paper describes the aims, contents, and technological features of an intelligent system prototype for helping building inspectors working in local government planning departments of small-sized towns in Apulia, Italy. The inspectors task is to assess the compliance, adequacy and eligibility of proposed projects with the laws and regulations in force. The participant observation method was used to collect a large amount of domain knowledge in six Planning Departments that were used to implement the prototype system and develop a general model for supporting building inspection. The goal is to develop an intelligent assistant, which: (1) can augment or supplements human expertise, (2) is adaptive, (3) provides nonlinear navigation, (4) makes effective use of available information, and (5) is user-friendly and interactive. The prototype integrates different techniques (databases, expert systems, and hypertext) within an Urban Information System.

One-Page Multimedia Interactive Map

The relevance of local knowledge in cultural heritage is by now acknowledged. It helps to determine many community-based projects by identifying the material to be digitally maintained in multimedia collections provided by communities of volunteers, rather than for-profit businesses or government entities. Considering that the search and browsing of texts, images, video, and 3D models related to places is more essential than using a simple text-based search, an interactive multimedia map was implemented in this study. The map, which is loaded on a single HyperText Markup Language (HTML) page using AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML), with a client-side control mechanism utilising jQuery components that are both freely available and ad-hoc developed, is updated according to user interaction. To simplify the publication of geo-referenced information, the application stores all the data in a Geographic JavaScript Object Notation (GeoJSON) file rather than in a database. The multimedia contents—associated with the selected Points of Interest (PoIs)—can be selected through text search and list browsing as well as by viewing their previews one by one in a sequence all together in a scrolling window (respectively: “Table”, “Folder”, and “Tile” functions). PoIs—visualised on the map with multi-shape markers using a set of unambiguous colours—can be filtered through their categories and types, accessibility status and timeline, thus improving the system usability. The map functions are illustrated using data collected in a Comenius project. Notes on the application software and architecture are also presented in this paper.

A.I.M. - Advanced Interactive Map

This paper discusses the ongoing development of a tool to produce - through an authoring system - an interactive map with advanced functions. A first map has been produced in collaboration with the Municipality of Cetinje (Montenegro); a map of the Municipality of Gioia del Colle is still under construction with students of a secondary school. These activities concern the Mu.S.A. (Must See Advisor) Project, a cultural heritage booster aiming at giving visibility to less known sites - as potential tourism destinations - by valuing knowledge from selected communities.

Designing and implementing an integrated system able to deal with large amount of highly heterogeneous data, to allow distributed data access and to provide collaboration between partners requires a deep analysis of the diverse requirements and habits of all the operators.

Remote Fruition of Architectures: R&D and Training Experiences

Remote fruition of architectures can be enhanced by using virtual tours more effectively. This technology suffers from a lack of information about context and objects, our user-centered approach described in this paper attempt to make progress in this direction to deliver virtual tours as a powerful, active learning tool to enhance understanding of monuments and sites, especially those with limited physical accessibility. First, a description of the basic principles, goals and methodological approach is presented. After a reflection on the potentiality of multimedia, web technologies and hypermedia in cultural heritage promotion, an experience in education & training is described in detail, focusing on technologies, learning approach and final products of the course programme. First results of a work in progress - capacity building in Srebrenica, Bosnia - close the paper.

The trend towards environmental protection is gaining momentum. Social and political forces are increasing the pressure for more environmentally-sound technological decisions. Companies also recognize that initiatives such as adoption of proper materials and waste management, efficient process and product design, energy efficiency, and recycling can be both profitable and environmentally preferable. New standards and mandates are encouraging companies to better manage their environmental costs and considerations; international standards1 are now requiring companies to develop environmental management systems.

Multimedia Interactive Map for CH Presentation

This article describes a novel Internet-based cultural heritage (CH) application, a multimedia interactive map with various user-friendly functions that allow users to find results according to their needs. Usually, the user selects a Point of Interest (PoI) to navigate a map, selecting it from a list or through a search function, as illustrated in the four cases studied here. The developed application allows the user to select a PoI and also view the previews of its multimedia contents (using the ‘Folder’, ‘Tile’ and ‘Table’ functions). Moreover, filtering functions—such as century (using the time slider), period, physical accessibility level and multimedia type (using the filter panel)—improve the system usability. Finally, PoIs are visualised on the map with multi-shape markers using a set of colours unambiguous to both colour-blind and non-colour-blind people. The interface is illustrated using data acquired from the Municipality of Cetinje (Montenegro). The software components are also illustrated, which contain useful information to other developers.

The aim of this work is the identification of proper tools for the multimodal delivery of information services on various types of terminals, in the context of a valorisation project for the National Park of Alta Murgia, Italy. An open source approach is proposed to the development of technological solutions that fit diverse aspects of the stakeholders needs, leveraging the dissemination of ICT resources and personal telecommunication terminals able to natively support the multimodal delivery of informative contents.

Integrated GIS for Building Control in Small Sized Cities — from DOS to Web

The idea at the basis of our work is to build an integrated system to support local government officials’ activity in the field of building development control. This paper illustrates the evolution of the urban information systems implemented by our Institute, in relationship both to the potentialities offered by the integration with hypertext and expert systems modules, and to the simplicity of use, having as a goal the adoption of these systems in small-sized Centres for building development control. The possibility to also access the urban information systems through Internet makes besides possible to extend their use to the building professionals and to the citizens, strengthening, in conclusion, the possibilities of a democratic control of the urban development. The research is actually involved in testing different techniques to develop our prototype on the Internet.
