The purpose of the research carried out was to identify ways in which tools and methodologies from Theory of Inventive Problem-Solving (TRIZ) might be used in Design for Environment (DFE) approaches. The aim was to develop an integrated methodology for environmentally superior product design at the conceptual stage of the product design phase. The paper commences with a review of the TRIZ methodology itself, followed by a discussion of the DFE strategies. A TRIZ approach to DFE is proposed as a new methodology and the paper concludes with a case study using the new TRIZ to DFE approach.

This work addresses the alloying of titanium aluminides used in aircraft engine applications and automobiles. The oxidation resistance behavior of two titanium aluminides of α2 + γ(Ti3Al + TiAl) and orthorhombic Ti2NbAl, recognized as candidates for high-temperature applications, was investigated by exposure of the alloys for 100 h in air. Thus, oxidation resistance was expressed as the mass gain rate, whereas surface aspects were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy in conjunction with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and the type of oxidation products was analyzed by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The orthorhombic Ti2NbAl alloy was embrittled, and pores and microcracks were formed as a result of oxygen diffusion through the external oxide layer formed during thermal oxidation for 100 h.

Currently in Romania it has been implemented the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) and its sustainability has become an impending need. In this paper, the authors propose an integrating structure, which involves a relatively large number of organizations for the sustainability of the National Qualifications Framework (CNC), while also providing quality assurance in higher education. Using quality management principles and their implementation stages as generic conceptual solutions, there have been established the specific conceptual solutions for the conceptual design of a system which the authors have called the System of Implementation and Sustainability of the National Qualifications Framework in Higher Education (SIS - CNCIS). It was then prepared the detailed design of the SIS-CNCIS for the particular case of implementation in Industrial Engineering.

Currently there is a continuous extension of application areas of titanium aluminides but their processing encounters a number of difficulties such as the precision of machining and modifying the properties of the surface layer. In the specialist literature [1, 2, 4, 7] different authors address the processing of these materials by conventional methods. In this context, this paper aims at finding the optimal regimes for the electrical discharge machining (EDM) of titanium aluminides Ti-40Al-5NB-3V and provides the analysis of the process parameters effect on cutting through wire EDM technological characteristics. In the case of wire EDM a relatively good output has been obtained as well as very good roughness of the processed surfaces. On the contrary, when considering the die sinking edm, due to very small output, several experimental measurements were performed on three machines – Sodick, ONA and ELER. Based on the experimental data, it has been established that the best output is to be obtained by reverse polarity machining.

Through rapid prototyping [1,2] it can be achieved both conceptual models: the final prototypes and functional parts in less time than with conventional technologies. The author of this paper shows the dependence of the diameter of liquid nitrogen spray nozzles according to the diameters of the water spray nozzle, a factor that is important in determining the amount of liquid nitrogen required to freeze the drop of water. Regarding the deposited layer thickness estimation, the author presented two theoretical models of contact between water droplets, which depend on the step between two consecutive drops of water.

This paper presents an applicative methodology of parametric computer aided design using the CATIA v5 software to model and assembly a modular fixture device. The device is then used in the orientation and clamping a part of type casing cover which has a face machined by milling. Having a constructive solution of the fixture device, the next step is to simulate a milling process through a FEM analysis to identify the working conditions: milling tool diameter, number of teeth, cutting forces, required power of the machine tool etc. Some parameters were chosen according to various tools manufacturers catalogues and the cutting force components were determined experimentally in laboratory conditions. The analysis results show that in the FEM simulated milling process, in all the fixture device parts, some tensions cause displacements that have an influence over the casing cover surface roughness.

In the context of implementation of the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) in Higher Education Area, building and assessment of skills in general and of transversal competences in particular is a key issue, which has not been entirely resolved yet. This paper presents a methodology developed by the authors, which refers to the contribution of the practice to building the transversal competences in graduates of higher education technical institutes, applied during a three-year program involving a relatively large number of students. Identifying the contribution of practical internship schemes to the acquisition of transversal competencies is an essential component of the overall evaluation of such skills. The results have shown that graduates who took part in special internship programs have attained a higher rate of insertion in the labor market. Moreover, the practical experience gained during bachelor study programs represented an important premise for the development of EQF level 7 transversal competences of the graduates enrolled in different Master programs.
