Abstract The paper examines the precision (accuracy) obtained with the Leica-Kem Mekometer ME 5000 distance meter on the calibration baseline Zagreb. A new method for the processing and analysing the measurements on the baseline is presented It provides an estimate of the precision, and, with thefrequency in the distance meter measured, the approximate accuracy as wel. For distances up to 100 m the standard deviation of distance measurement in one direction S = 0.058 mm is obtained For distances in the range of 100 to 3000 m, applying the proposed method of data processing, the standard deviation of a measured distance (measured forward and backward, and on the basis of adjusting all measurements on the baseline) srDII = 0.12mm + 0.21mm. D km was obtained in 1988, and in 1996 s′rDII = 0.07 mm − 0.13 mm.D km + 0.37mm.D2 km .

Abstract At the Faculty of Geodesy, University of Zagreb, the automatic astronomical method of determining the azimuth by observing stars and the Sun has been developed within the frame of the scientific work. The classical astronomical method of azimuth determination is rather uneconomical because of extensive field measurements and long-lasting processing. The automation of measuring procedures and processing has enabled the application of the astronomical method in everyday surveying practice, and also in determining the tunnel cut direction, in the independent control of microtrilateration and GPS networks above tunnels. The importance of such an independent control of geodetic networks above tunnels lies in the fact: That we control the relative positional relationships of the points at the entrance, and the exit of a tunnel, respectively, That we control whether the exact value the deflection of the vertical have been taken into account. Namely, the deflection of the vertical at the points for traverse orientation used for entering the tunnel can be remarkable which can largely influence the traversing orientation, especially if the orientation sighting lines are steep. Applying the astronomical determination of azimuth as an independent control of trilateration or GPS networks over long tunnels, the surveyors can expect with more confidence that the tunnel be cut without any problems.

The paper deals with the automatic grid azimuth determination of an object on the earth using the electronic theodolite Kern E2 by observing the sun, a star, or a planet. The observation time and the readings of horizontal and vertical circles of the electronic theodolite enter automatically the electronic calculator Hewlett-Packard HP41CX. The calculator computes the grid azimuth of the terrestrial object and directs the observer what to do. Therefore, even a personnel without specific high education can make observations. For the solar observations it is not necessary to have an astronomical almanac, because the program computes the solar coordinates. The general input data, together with the measured ones, can be stored on a magnetic cassette and later on, if necessary, one can correct the general data and recalculate the azimuth. The method proved to be very practical in the field work.

The paper presents the automatic time recording of transits of the image of a star across the hairs in the visual field of a telescope and the automatic reception of radio time signals for the determination of astronomical latitude and longitude of a station using an astrolabe. The automatization was achieved by an electronic calculator Hewlett Packard HP41CX and an especially constructed relay. The method proved very practical in the course of making the network of geoidal points more dense for the needs of geodesy.
