Polarisation magneto-optical effects in a diode-pumped cw Nd{sup 3+}:Bi{sub 4}Ge{sub 3}O{sub 12} laser oscillating at 1.06425 and 1.3418 {mu}m

The characteristics of a cw Nd3+:Bi4Ge3O12 laser oscillating at 1.06425 μm are studied as functions of the strength of a longitudinal magnetic field. The laser was found to be highly sensitive to the action of an alternating magnetic field with a frequency equal to the frequency of relaxation oscillations. The cw lasing was also obtained at 1.3418 μm.

Effect of a static electric field on the output of a stimulated-Raman hydrogen laser

A study has been made of how a static external electric field affects the output of a stimulated-Raman-scattering laser using compressed hydrogen. The external field substantially influences the energy distribution among the higher-index components of the stimulated emission. At a qualitative level, this effect can be explained on the basis that a dipole moment is induced in the hydrogen molecule and that a transition from the first vibrational level to the ground state becomes allowed.
