The Jesuit and Catholic dogmatic theologian Raymund Schwager was the first theologian to discover the opportunities of Rene Girard’s thinking for theology. For almost thirty years, Schwager conducted his work in dialogue and cooperation with Girard, and he can be seen as one of his foremost theological interpreters. Recent research into Schwager’s academic estate has shown, however, that Schwager is much more than that. He is a co-developer of mimetic theory, especially its religious aspects. Schwager proceeded to develop his own kind of theological research program and hermeneutical tool that provides both a theological anthropology and a methodological approach to theology; it was developed together with mimetic theory.
