- Encap—Addressing the needs to capture CO 2 efficiently

Publisher Summary This chapter gives an overview of the ENCAP consortium, which is a major research and development (R&D) integrated project within the European Union 6th R&D Framework Programme (FP6). Its objective is to develop new pre-combustion CO2-capture technologies and processes for power generation based on fossil fuels that are considered to be clean and affordable.. The project aims at technologies that meet the target of at least 90% capture rate and 50% CO2-capture-cost reduction, with focus on pre-combustion technologies including oxy-fuel systems. The results from the first phase of the project will give guidance to which technologies will be tested in semi-industrial applications after an internal ranking has been made. ENCAP involves all key stakeholders within the CO2 management topic: equipment manufacturers, power companies, oil and gas producers- suppliers, research institutions and universities. One of the main targets of ENCAP is to deliver results that have the potential for a wide commercial exploitation with the time horizon 2015-2020.
