Anupriya Tuli; Nitasha Hasteer; Megha Sharma; Abhay Bansal

Technological advancements have contributed to more complex software demands. The Agile approach to software development is widely practiced by the software development industry as it offers faster production with a promise of better software quality. It also provides a flexible process to accommodate changes during the software development life cycle, as per dynamic user requirements. In this paper we characterize the significance of software development models and the role of Agile methodologies in todays dynamic world of technologies. The purpose of this paper is to empirically investigate the choice between two of the Agile methodologies, Scrum and Extreme Programming. The outcome of the investigation based on secondary sources and limited primary sources, reveals that current software industry practices tend to opt for Scrum-based development. This work highlights the benefits of bringing the cloud and Agile methods of software development together, to fully realize the potential of the distributed paradigm.

Framework to leverage cloud for the modernization of the Indian agriculture system

Anupriya Tuli; Nitasha Hasteer; Megha Sharma; Abhay Bansal

In India, Information and Communication technology (ICT) is being used vastly as a tool in almost every sector like education, health, media, etc. But if we talk about Indian agriculture, ICT is still to be exploited for its benefits. Many initiatives have been taken by Government of India to promote and introduce ICT in agricultural field. On comparing to its counter developing countries like China, Japan, etc. where advanced ICT technologies like IOT are being implemented in agriculture sector, we find that for India still there is a long road ahead to travel. This paper proposes a cloud deployment model “Agri-assistant”, which provides agriculture related information assistance to Indian farmers living in rural areas, facing financial and connectivity constraints. The model leverages the existing Government services and mobile service to provide a solution to existing scenario with minimum burden on farmers pocket.

Megha Sharma; Nitasha Hasteer; Anupriya Tuli; Abhay Bansal

Hadoop Technology is commonly being used to manage Big Data projects. The research done in this domain has increased over the past few years. In order to investigate whether Hadoop Technology is the next big thing we have conducted systematic literature review on the usage of Hadoop technology in Big Data projects. This work outlines the usage of Hadoop technology from year 2010 to 2013 using publications of conference proceedings, journals and magazines of IEEEXplore as primary studies. With the help of search strategy followed, we identified 690 research papers out of which 296 were identified as relevant papers. We observed that 166 studies by different authors were utilizing Hadoop Technology as tool in Big Data projects whereas only 130 studies were purely on Hadoop. This review will assist researchers to understand the present scenario of research in Big Data projects using Hadoop technology.

Pragmatic assessment of research intensive areas in cloud: a systematic review

Nitasha Hasteer; Abhay Bansal; B. K. Murthy

Cloud computing is a name given to a set of systems for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction. Cloud computing is aimed at making an organization more agile and cost effective. Due to the rapid evolution of Cloud Computing in the recent past, it is relevant to investigate the key areas of research of this technology. In this paper, we present a systematic review of research intensive areas in the field of cloud computing. Research papers in the period from 2009 to 2012 were gathered. A total of 36 research papers were reviewed systematically and categorized into four broad categories based on the issues addressed by them. We identified that the majority of the research papers focused on Cloud Security. By systematically analyzing the work accomplished so far, the gaps and yet to be explored areas in this field are brought to light.

A survey on agile practices in the Indian IT industry

Noshiba Nazir; Nitasha Hasteer; Abhay Bansal

Advancements in technology have added to more complex demands of software development. The adoption of Agile practices to develop the software gives an adaptable environment to cater to the changes according to the clients requirements. In this paper we investigate the extent of adoption of agile practices with regard to the Indian IT Industry. We hosted a web based survey focusing on five major areas pertaining to adoption, self-organization, effect of agile, application domain of agile practices and the stakeholder interaction. We have found that adoption of agile practices affects the cost and increases the productivity.

A comprehensive study on state of Scrum development

Shruti Sharma; Nitasha Hasteer

The software industry has moved from the traditional software development to the agile software development model. Under this umbrella there are many methodologies which are Scrum, Extreme Programming, Crystal, FDD (Feature-driven development), DSDM (Dynamic Systems Development Method), etc. This paper investigates about the current state of Scrum, its popularity and its evolution in the recent five years. We have taken into consideration the published literature and industrial survey. Our result reveals that among various agile methodologies, Scrum is a popular software development methodology used by industries and it is also the area of interest for the research community.

Interpretive structure modelling(ISM) for feature dependency in sentiment analysis

Hina Gupta; Nitasha Hasteer; Rana Majumdar

Under the domain of text mining, Sentiment Analysis is a field that is in progress these days. Sentiment analysis is the calculative analysis of views, sentiments, opinions and positivity or negativity of a text. This paper identifies the factors that are responsible for the different sentiments of a person regarding a particular entity. In this work, the objective is to categorize the factors that influence the system of sentiment analysis due to varied sentiments of an individual. The methodology of Interpretative Structure Modeling has been employed for identifying the driving power and the dependent power of the various elements influencing sentiment analysis.

Crowdsourced software development: Exploring the motivational and inhibiting factors of the South African crowd

Floyd Moodley; Jean-Paul Van Belle; Nitasha Hasteer

This research paper explores what factors contribute to software developers in South Africa taking part in crowdsourced software development. These factors include motivations as well as challenges and this research takes an in depth look at what incentives affect the different motives to participate in crowdsourcing. To explore these factors, the Motives, Incentives, Activation, and Behaviour (MIAB) research has been adapted to investigate what incentives contribute to the motivations of money, pleasure, self-efficacy, and altruism. The research analyses data from respondents that are either software developers or work in software development and comes to the conclusion that there are various incentives that contribute to the different motives for taking part in crowdsourced software development, however, for developers in South Africa, pleasure, self-efficacy, and altruism seem to be more important than that of receiving income for crowdsourcing tasks.

Identifying the contextual relationship among the Agile adoption factors through interpretive structural modeling

Shruti Sharma; Nitasha Hasteer; S. P. Mishra; Jean-Paul Van Belle

Today, industry is moving towards adopting an Agile development methodology due to its numerous benefits over other methodologies. There are certain pertinent attributes of this methodology that facilitates towards adoption of Agile at large. Our study focuses on identification of these attributes and establishes a contextual relationship among them. We have incorporated the Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) approach to establish a model and classify the identified attributes.

Analysis of linear sequential and extreme programming development methodology for a gaming application

Pooja Sharma; Nitasha Hasteer

There exist various software development methodologies under agile software development method. Extreme programming (XP) is known as one of the agile development methods that has gained popularity in the recent past. Waterfall model which is termed as linear sequential development model has been the traditional model of development. Both extreme programming and waterfall focus on different aspects during the process of software development and management. In this work we have analyzed the linear sequential software development methodology and the extreme programming method with regard to time constraints and risk mitigation. Our study shows that though there is no single methodology suited in all scenarios of development yet extreme programming gives fast delivery and less exposure to risks.
