Multiple surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors were prepared on a waveguide, and vapor sensing was carried out. A BK-7 slide glass was used as a waveguide core, and three pairs of Ag films (50 nm)/polymer films with various thicknesses were prepared separately on the waveguide. White light was input from the substrate edge, and the spectrum of the output light was observed. Discrete SPR dips can be observed in the output light spectra by selecting the dielectric constant and the thickness of the polymer film, which govern the SPR condition. The sensors with poly(vinyl alcohol) as sensing material were prepared and the water vapor sorption properties were investigated. Furthermore, polyisoprene, poly(vinyl carbazole), poly(methyl methacrylate), and perfluorinated polymer were used as sensing materials, and the detection of various vapors was carried out.

The performance requirements of polymer waveguides used in optical telecommunication and their future opportunities are discussed. The polymer waveguide is suited for mass production and has an excellent cost performance ratio; therefore, it is to be utilized in the home terminals of FTTH. Fluorinated polyimides will be used for these terminals because they have good optical properties, high heat resistance, and long-term reliability. We have fabricated the fluorinated polyimide planar lightwave circuit integrated with V-groove contributing to high throughput assembly and automated manufacturing of high performance transceiver modules, and confirmed it accurate enough for optical network units.

Nd3+ complex doped polymer liquid laser have been demonstrated and the threshold of the laser was also calculated. The calculation results that a laser media with 2 mm length is suitable for low threshold laser oscillation. We obtained the slope efficiency of 20% and the maximum output energy of 5.3 mJ at the pumping energy of 31 mJ by the method of the side pumping. To the best of knowledge, this is the highest slope efficiency of the bulky laser using Nd3+ complex.

We demonstrated a Nd3+ complex doped solid-state polymer laser. The laser threshold was reduced to 334 μJ with a new solid-state host matrix and a short laser cavity. Its low threshold enables LD pumping operation.
