Revolutionary direction for 5G mobile core network architecture

Young-Il Choi; Jae-Ho Kim; Noik Park

It is expected that the emergence of new service scenarios driven by user needs beyond 2020 will be different from today. But current 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) network is not enough to fulfill arising new requirements because of fundamental problems in Evolved Packet Core (EPC), including centralized routing mechanism. In this regard, 5G mobile network architecture needs to be redesigned to solve the problems of EPC. In this paper, we present revolutionary direction for the architecture of 5G mobile core network to meet the requirements of the new services which are described in IMT (International Mobile Telecommunications) 2020 vision. In addition we propose a reference model and key mechanisms to implement those proposed directions for 5G mobile core network.

To guarantee the quality of video data into fast-responding transmission and high resolution output video using cost effective video processing is desirable in many services including Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The goal of this study is to develop a transmission method to improve a quality of service (QoS) to support for various multimedia contents with high quality on 5 generation (5G) convergence network. The main motivation is based on video feature and dependency between frames and blocks in coding structure. First, we investigate the existing methods and analyze them into some classes. From the analyzed result, we propose a priority-based key frame protection method for improving QoS of in 5G convergence network.

Slice architecture for 5G core network

Young-Il Choi; Noik Park

The emergence of new service scenarios driven by user needs beyond 2020 generates new mobile network requirements. Current 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) network is not enough to fulfill arising new requirements because of fundamental problems in Evolved Packet Core (EPC), including centralized routing mechanism. In this regard, 5G mobile network architecture needs to be redesigned for emerging use cases. In this paper, we present network slice architecture for 5G core network and provide working mechanisms for slice selection, NAS routing, and slice reselection to support multiple logical networks over a single physical network.

The design of Non-AS signaling for multi-RATs traffic steering

Yoohwa Kang; Sunmi Jun; Noik Park

Different types of 5G service scenarios impact on 5G network architecture by considering multi-RATs such as 5G RATs, WiFi, and fixed network to fulfill the requirements of different services. Therefore, new signaling architecture between Consumer Electronics (CE) and Core Network (CN) in 5G needs to be designed for optimizing the coordination between different access networks. We propose the design of signaling architecture between CE and CN through multiple access networks to support various types of services in 5G and beyond.

Unified control architecture for 5G convergence network

Jeounglak Ha; Noik Park

Future data traffic is expected to be tremendously increased. The huge traffic is necessary to be supported by various types of access networks rather than a single type of access network. The 5G network assumes fixed wireline and WiFi as access technologies as well as a new 5G Radio Access Technology (RAT). In this paper, we discuss a unified control architecture to provide access control and session control using a common signaling scheme in 5G. The proposed unified control minimizes access network dependency. The discussion of access control and session control reveals our study on their functionalities. Although the proposed architecture is not fully comply with 3GPP developing standard, our study on access control and session control reveals their functionalities.

Hyeon Yang; Sang Ju Lee; Noik Park; Chang-Ki Kim; Seong Gon Choi

The need to configure the network structure is different from the legacy network system in order to meet the needs of the core network 5G. Legacy network does not satisfy an increase in the increase in connection delay time and the traffic at the centralized model. generating requests and trigger central node which occurs in a number up connection small cell and the terminal will give much burden to the MME in charge of Mobility Management from EPC. Moreover, EPC is dependent on GTP is a protocol for supporting the terminal mobility that was used in the 2G / 3G. GTP can be that maintained to support Mobility, GTP tunnel management which requires heavy signaling and handover that occur frequently will be giving a burden to the MME complicate. In addition, the tunnel is sensitive to time and delay, will result in a packet overhead. Therefore, we attempt to propose an architecture which can meet the scheme and 5G requirements can solve the problems with GTP.

Unified access control for 5G convergence network with DHCP

Jeounglak Ha; Noik Park

Traditionally wireline network and wireless network have been operated and managed separately. Future network will provide converged network service on wireline and wireless networks together. Service requirement for unified access to both wireline and wireless networks emerged as we experience more sophisticated network services. This paper discusses a unified access control for 5G convergence network with multiplicity of different access networks. With minor change onto Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) we can reuse authentication information among various access technologies on 5G convergence network. The proposed method enables us to reuse authentication information from one access network onto another access network. Authentication reuse and unified access control will reduce complexity of 5G convergence network access procedure with multiple access networks and provide consistent access procedure regardless what access technology a user chooses to use.
