Ontology-Based Knowledge Management for Enterprise Systems

Darshana Sedera; Mohammad Nazir Ahmad; Nor Hidayati Zakaria

Companies face the challenges of expanding their markets, improving products, services and processes, and exploiting intellectual capital in a dynamic network. Therefore, more companies are turning to an Enterprise System (ES). Knowledge management (KM) has also received considerable attention and is continuously gaining the interest of industry, enterprises, and academia. For ES, KM can provide support across the entire lifecycle, from selection and implementation to use. In addition, it is also recognised that an ontology is an appropriate methodology to accomplish a common consensus of communication, as well as to support a diversity of KM activities, such as knowledge repository, retrieval, sharing, and dissemination. This paper examines the role of ontology-based KM for ES (OKES) and investigates the possible integration of ontology-based KM and ES. The authors develop a taxonomy as a framework for understanding OKES research. In order to achieve the objective of this study, a systematic review of existing research was conducted. Based on a theoretical framework of the ES lifecycle, KM, KM for ES, ontology, and ontology-based KM, guided by the framework of study, a taxonomy for OKES is established.

The mediating role of knowledge integration in effect of leadership styles on enterprise systems success: The post-implementation stage

Razatulshima Ghazali; Mohammad Nazir Ahmad; Nor Hidayati Zakaria

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to show empirically how knowledge management, particularly knowledge integration (KI), acts as a mediator between different leadership styles and Enterprise Systems (ES) success. It proposes a model of KI as a mediator between two leadership styles (the transformational and transactional leadership styles). The study also aims to expose the most relevant leadership styles to be practiced by leaders when managing the ES post-implementation stage. Design/methodology/approach – Valid data were collected from 263 survey respondents in Malaysian companies. The authors employed structural equation modelling and used the path modelling approach to investigate the underlying relationships between the variables. The authors then tested the mediating effects of KI by using the bootstrapping procedures proposed by Preacher and Hayes, which suits the path analysis method. Findings – The results provide empirical evidence on the relationships between the variables and on the role...

Implementing Enterprise Resource Planning ERP projects in many organizations are faced with failure concept in recent years. Researchers focused to implement ERP projects successfully by proposing the success model. However, through these attentions to get ERP benefits, the ERP failure measurement model is required. Therefore, the aim of this study is to develop the instruments for ERP post-implementation failure measurement model. To achieve this outcome, the study firstly evaluates the suitability of Technology-Organization-Environment framework for the proposed conceptual model. Constructs were used for this model included two formative and six reflective constructs. A questionnaire was developed to test the validity and reliability of instrument items. A survey was conducted among Iranian industries to collect data and data analyzed by Smart PLS software. The results indicated that all instruments items included 37 critical risk factors CRFs as measurement were acceptable for the ERP post-implementation failure model.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the efficacy of customer relationship management (CRM) benefits for customers in relation to customer satisfaction. A model has been developed and empirically tested through survey data collected from 150 customers of three Malaysian companies. The results indicate that the benefits of CRM for customers have had a significant positive effect on their satisfaction in marketing companies. Personalized service, responsiveness to customers needs, customer segmentation, customization of marketing, multichannel integration, time-saving and improving customer knowledge are the benefits that we proposed would affect customer satisfaction in order to significantly improve marketing performance. Additionally, the results reveal that all the benefits found, with the exception of time-saving, enhanced customer satisfaction. This paper contributes to the existing literature by incorporating the benefits of CRM for customers and the relationships of these benefits with their satisfaction in the proposed model.

Using TAM to Study the User Acceptance of IT in the Yemeni Public Sector

Esmat Abdulmajid Wahdain; Mohammad Nazir Ahmad; Nor Hidayati Zakaria

Although IT offers promising improvements in public sector efficiency, there is a consensus that these cannot be realized until IT tools become widely spread and used. This study aims to improve the utilization of IT in the context of the Yemeni public sector by identifying the factors that influence IT user’s acceptance. The Research proposes a model based on the Technology Acceptance Model with some added factors that are believed to have a significant influence in the context being studied, such as: organizational culture and individual factors as external factors, perceived personal benefit, and gender as a moderator to the relationships between organizational culture and both perceived usefulness and perceived personal benefit. To test the model and the proposed hypotheses, quantitative method was used. A questionnaire was prepared and validated by five experts, and then distributed and answered by 139 employees of the ministry of Social Affairs and Labour (MoSAL) in Hadhramout- Yemen, who use IT in their jobs. The SmartPLS software was used to test measurement model, and to assess the structural model and test the proposed hypotheses. The results revealed the significance of the proposed factors, organizational cultural was found to be very influential on perceived usefulness and perceived personal benefit, and perceived usefulness, in turn, was very important determinant of attitude, and consequently, on the behavioural intention of employees towards using IT, the gender impact was also proven statistically, however, the individual factors was found to have no significant influence on the perceived personal benefit, as the model suggested. The study is expected to have significant impact on the study domain, public sector in Yemen, by enriching the managerial knowledge about the importance of the factors investigated in this study. More importantly, the study will enrich the body of literature on technology acceptance by introducing a case study that has not been previously covered, namely, a public sector organization in a growing country with special cultural and social conditions.

Azizah Abdul Rahman; Nor Hidayati Zakaria; Nur Naha Abu Mansor; Rabiah Eladwiah Abdul Rahim

This study develops and tests a theoretical model to investigate the role of Green IT internal management within organisations. Specifically, this model explains the antecedents and the outcomes of Green IT Internal Management (GITIM). The hypotheses were tested using survey data from 133 Malaysian IT companies. Using Partial least Square (PLS) of structural equation model, the measurement model is accessed followed by structural model assessment. First, the result shows that GITIM can be constructed as formative second order construct constitutes of sourcing, operation and disposal dimensions. Second, the top management support in environmental issues does not have positive affect on GITIM. Rather, the knowledge stock and IT business experience have positive affect on GITIM. Third, GITIM is confirmed to positively affect competitive advantage; both cost and differentiation advantage. This study suggests that information system resources, which are known to be important for innovation process, also contribute to GITIM and in turn lead to competitive advantage.

Top Management Support and Project Team for System/ITProject Success

Assist Lecturer. Mustafa Othman Alsaigh; Nor Hidayati Zakaria

Although business performance has long been theoretically hypothesized to be dependent on the level of underlying Information Technology capability, there is a lack of adequate empirical studies to support this claim. In this thesis the researcher discusses how significant top management support and project team towards the success of IT project/system. Significance of IT project/system is the backbone of the organization performance. Based on a real-life case study of developer systems, a model that depicts the level significance of top management support and project team towards information systems success was conducted. To achieve this objectives, quantitative survey method were conducted with 28 developers in CICT department in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Data obtained is used to measure the relationship between top management support and project team towards the success of IT project/system for the organization performance. Results show possibility in business performance due to support of top management and project team in accessing information systems success. Recommendations and guideline to avoid developer resistance in systems success are also presented. An equally important future direction is a psychological understanding of the developers’ perspectives, attitude strength, attitude structure, and shift resistance to change
