Driver assistance today and its potential for the future

In light of the sheer number of victims of road accidents and the commitment of both the European Union and the automotive industry to reduce the number of victims by half before the end of the decade, driver assistance systems appear to be shaping the trend of automotive electronics for the near future. The present contribution depicts a generic roadmap of driver assistance systems and describes the main functions which are under development today.
