Contamination of agricultural products and soils with radiocesium derived from the accident at TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station: monitoring, case studies and countermeasures

ABSTRACT Five years have passed since the accident at Tokyo Electric Power Company Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station that was triggered by the Great East Japan Earthquake on 11 March 2011. Severe damage to agriculture and the environment is still of great concern in Japanese society. We review the contamination status of agricultural products and soils, decontamination efforts and countermeasures to reduce radiocesium concentration in soil and crops, as well as the responses of Japanese ministries. Since rice is an important staple food for Japanese, the impact of radiocesium on rice (Oryza sativa L.) and paddy fields has been extensively investigated since the accident, and, therefore, issues concerning rice receive considerable attention in this review.

Radiocesium interception potential of agricultural soils in northeast Japan

ABSTRACT The health risks associated with the long-term intake of radiocesium from food have been of great concern since the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station accident in 2011. Therefore, evaluating the phytoavailability and mobility of radiocesium in soil and determining the ability of soil to fix radiocesium are important research topics. The capacity and selectivity for 137Cs sorption in soil is evaluated on the basis of the radiocesium interception potential (RIP). Here, we measured the RIP of 925 farmland soil samples collected from Fukushima Prefecture and surrounding regions and plotted the values on a soil classification map and a surface geological map. The RIP values ranged from 73 to 12700 mmol kg−1, and a wide range was also observed among samples with identical soil types and geological features; however, the RIP values were significantly low for Andosols (P ≤ 0.05). In addition, soils that did not contain vermiculite, illite and smectite had low RIP values. All measured RIP values were negatively correlated with the total C content and phosphate absorption capacity and positively correlated with the clay, silt, and exchangeable K and Ca content (P ≤ 0.01). However, the relationship between the RIP and the measured soil properties, except for the exchangeable K content, is strongly dependent on the soil classification and clay mineral composition. Therefore, the soil properties that most significantly influence the RIP values are probably differences in the soil parent materials, which influence the soil classification and clay mineral composition.

Chemical speciation and enzymatic impact of silver in antimicrobial fabric buried in soil

This study investigated the impact of Ag in antibacterial fabric on soil enzymes in relation to solubility and speciation of Ag. Sections of Ag-containing sock fabric (1.0-1.5cm(2)) were incubated in soils with aerobic and anaerobic conditions and periodically determined activity of arylsulfatase, dehydrogenase and urease. Microscale distribution and speciation of Ag at the interface between socks and soil particles were investigated using micro-focused X-ray fluorescence (μ-XRF), and Ag speciation was determined using micro-focused X-ray absorption near edge structure (μ-XANES) spectroscopy. Results showed that the sock fabric consisted of elemental Ag and Ag2S. After 60-day exposure to soil, majority (50-90%) of Ag in sock did not undergo phase transformation and present as elemental Ag and Ag2S in aerobic and anaerobic conditions. A part of Ag in sock fabric was bound with soil colloids (<15%), depending on the distance from the edge of sock fabric. Soil enzyme activities were overall unaffected by Ag in sock textile after 60days of incubation, although a significant decrease in arylsulfatase activity was found only in the initial stage of soil incubation. Silver in the sock fabric is relatively stable and has little detrimental impacts on enzyme activity in ordinary soil conditions.
