炭素電極を用いた低温常圧の水素酸素燃料電池に関し,その実用化の見地から,電池構造,電極材料,触媒,電解液,温度条件などにつき実験を行なって開発のための基礎的条件を求めた。実験に使用した電池構造は本文各図に示した通りであるが,電極材料としては粒状活性炭を用い,白金またはパラジウムを触媒として担持させた場合,概ね理論値に近い開路電圧を得ることができる。電解液は水酸化カリウム溶液を使用しその濃度を検討した結果では一定濃度以上では電池の機能に著しい影響を生じないことが認められた。温度条件は起電力にかなりの影響を与え,それは温度の上昇と共に低下するが,平衡電位に到達する時間,ならびに,電流効率から考えれば,温度が高いほど能率がよいことになる。だが常圧で使用される電池である限り,70℃程度を越えることは好ましくない。電極部分における反応速度は固体,液体,気体の3相界面の広さに支配され,そのために電極の電解液に対する濡れの状態が電池の性能に影響することが著しいのが認められ,電極にシリコーン系の防水剤を塗布することによって,電極反応は著しく高められた。この種の処置は水素酸素電池に限らず,一般の気体燃料電池に適用されるべきものと考えられた。
