Shuffle Exchange Network in Multistage Interconnection Network: A Review and Challenges

Nur Arzilawati Md Yunus; Mohamed Othman

Multistage Interconnection Networks (MINs) are design to provide an effective communication in switching. MINs networks consist of stages that can route the switching through the path. In this types of network the major problem occur when the switch failed to route in the stage. If these situations occur the switching need to be route to an alternative path to avoid from system failure. Shuffle-exchange networks have been widely considered as practical interconnection systems due to their size of it switching elements and uncomplicated configuration. It can helps in fault tolerance and reduce the latency. As an illustration, there are mainly six types of SEN which are important to MINs, namely SEN with additional stages, Improved Irregular Augmented Shuffle Multistage Interconnection Network (IIASN), Irregular Modified Alpha Network (ALN), Irregular Augmented Shuffle Network (IASN), Irregular Augmented Shuffle Exchange Network (IASEN) and Generalized Shuffle Exchange Network (GSEN) were reviewed and described their challenges in this paper.

Reliability Evaluation and Routing Integration in Shuffle Exchange Omega Network

Nur Arzilawati Md Yunus; Mohamed Othman

Multistage Interconnection Networks (MINs) are design to provide an effective communication in switching. Shuffle-exchange networks (SENs) have been widely considered as practical interconnection systems due to their size of it switching elements (SEs) and uncomplicated configuration. In this paper, the relationship between reliability performance and number of network size are compared in shuffle exchange network (SEN) and SEN with minus one stages (SEN-). There are three parameters used to measure the reliability performance on these networks which is terminal reliability, broadcast reliability and network reliability. An addition this paper also focused on comparing the algorithm based on SEN- to achieve the optimal routing time and the number of passes. The algorithms consist of six algorithms namely ZeroX, ZeroY, ZeroXbit, ZeroYbit, Sequential Increasing and Sequential Decreasing algorithm. This paper also shows the details of the illustrative examples used to explain each parameter measures. At the end of this chapter, the comparative analysis shows the performance of each parameters measures.

Reliability Review of Interconnection Networks

Nur Arzilawati Md Yunus; Mohamed Othman; Zurina Mohd Hanapi; Kweh Yeah Lun

ABSTRACT Interconnection networks provide communication among processors, memory modules, and other devices in parallel computer systems. The number of stages, interconnection topology, and the types of SE used in the network configuration differentiate each interconnection network. As an illustration, there are numerous aspects that are important in the development of interconnection networks. Reliability can be considered as an important factor to measure the performance in the network. The reliability for interconnection network depends on the reliability of its components. In this paper, we examine the various topologies of interconnection, communication protocol, and discuss reliability issues related to interconnection network.

Reliability performance of shuffle exchange omega network

Nur Arzilawati Md Yunus; Mohamed Othman

Multistage Interconnection Networks (MINs) are design to provide an effective communication in switching. In optical MIN, optical signal are routed through the connecting path by electronically controlled switching element using directional coupler. Shuffle-exchange networks (SENs) have been widely considered as practical interconnection systems due to their size of it switching elements (SEs) and uncomplicated configuration. In this paper, the relationship between reliability performance and number of network size are compared in shuffle exchange network (SEN), SEN with minus one stages (SEN-) and SEN with additional stage (SEN+). There are three parameters used to measure the reliability performance on these networks which is terminal reliability, broadcast reliability and network reliability. From the results the proposed SEN- have a better reliability performance compared to SEN and SEN+.

Empirical Analysis of Terminal Reliability in Multistage Interconnection Networks

Nur Arzilawati Md Yunus; Mohamed Othman

Multistage interconnection network provide communication among processors, memory modules and other devices in parallel computer systems. These networks are designed to provide fast and efficient communication with a reasonable cost. The number of stages, interconnection topology, and network configuration differentiate the reliability of each network. Reliability is used to measure the system capability to transform information from input to output devices and its depends on the reliability of its component. Evaluation of reliability of interconnection network has been attempted by researchers in the past. This paper is an depth study of reliability evaluation in multistage interconnection network. The measurement includes terminal reliability of regular network known as shuffle exchange network and gamma network.

Nur Arzilawati Md Yunus; Mohamed Othman; Zurina Bt Mohd Hanapi; Yeah Lun Kweh

Nowadays, the Multistage Interconnection Network (MIN) is highly demand in switching process environment. MINs are well known for their cost efficiency which enables economic solution in communication and interconnection. Important features in interconnection topologies are improvement toward performance and increment of reliability. In general, the importance of the reliability will be proportionally increased with the increment of size as well as system complexity. In this paper, we proposed replicated shuffle-exchange network and compared with Benes and Shuffle-Exchange Network (SEN) topology to investigate the behavior analysis of MINs reliability. Three types of behaviors, namely, as basic stage, extra stage, and replicated stage, have been compared in this paper. The results show that replicated network provides highest reliability performance among all topologies measured in this paper.
