Alloy 625 is susceptible to precipitation of Ni 3 Nb upon exposure to temperatures in the range of 650 to 870°C. Since this phase is low in chromium content as shown later, it can be expected to degrade the chemical stability of the alloy in oxidizing media. It is the objective of this investigation to determine the effect of Ni 3 Nb precipitation in alloy 625 on its corrosion resistance to an oxidizing medium (nitric acid)

A carbon steel pipe with an internal diameter of25 mm and a wall thickness of 3mm was connected to a turbine support and used to transport Lube oil (grade 32) to the turbine bearing at a power plant. During operation, the pipe was subjected to mechanical vibration giving rise to alternating stresses. The pipe was fractured after 166,701 hours of service. The pipe carried a working pressure of 1 Bar and was operated at a temperature of 50-55°C. The objective of this study was to determine the most probable cause offailure of the lube oil pipe and provide proper recommendations for preventive measures.
