An additional event near the upper kinematic limit for K+ to pi+ nu nubar has been observed by Experiment E949 at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Combining previously reported and new data, the branching ratio is B(K+ to pi+ nu nubar)= 1.47 (+1.30, - 0.89) x 10-10 based on three events observed in the pion momentum region 211<P<229 MeV/c. At the measured central value of the branching ratio, the additional event had a signal-to-background ratio of 0.9.

Experiment E949 at Brookhaven National Laboratory has observed three new events consistent with the decay K+ => pi+,nu,nubar in the pion momentum region 140 pi+,nu,nubar events to seven. Combining this observation with previous results, assuming the pion spectrum predicted by the standard model, results in a branching ratio of (1.73+1.15-1.05)e-10. An interpretation of the results for alternative models of the decay K^ => pi+,nothing is also presented.

Abstract Extruded plastic scintillation counters with WLS fiber readout are described. For a 7 mm thick counter with 4.3 m long double-clad fibers spaced at 7 mm a light yield of 18.7 photoelectrons/MeV and a time resolution of 0.71 ns ( σ ) were obtained. A prototype photon veto module consisting of 10 layers of 7 mm thick grooved plastic slabs interleaved with 1 mm lead sheets was also tested, which yielded 122 photoelectrons per minimum ionizing particle and time resolution of 360 ps .

Evidence of a heavy neutrino, ν H , in the K + → μ + ν H decays was sought using the E949 experimental data with an exposure of 1.70 × 1 0 12 stopped kaons. With the major background from the radiative K + → μ + ν μ γ decay understood and suppressed, upper limits (90%xa0C.L.) on the neutrino mixing matrix element between the muon and heavy neutrinos, | U μ H | 2 , were set at the level of 1 0 - 7 to 1 0 - 9 for the heavy neutrino mass region 175 to 300 MeV / c 2 .

Scintillation ring hodoscope with WLS fiber readout

A. Ivashkin; Y. Kudenko; O. Mineev; J. Imazato

Abstract A simple tracking system for measuring the K+ decay vertex along the beam axis in the T-Violation Experiment (E246) at KEK is described. It consists of 32 grooved BC408 plastic scintillator rings with embedded Y11 wavelength-shifting (WLS) optical fibers. Both ends of each multi-clad WLS fiber are directly viewed by a green-extended photomultiplier. Light yield of 46 photoelectrons per minimum ionizing particle in the 5 mm thick ring has been achieved. This configuration gives 1.7 mm position resolution determined purely by the 6 mm width of each ring. Time resolution of 1.0 ns and detection efficiency of 98.4% were obtained.

Abstract A photon detector for BNL experiment E949 is described. The detector consists of a lead scintillator “sandwich” of 25 layers of 5 mm thick scintillator BC404 and 24 layers of 2 mm lead absorber. Readout is implemented with 30– 60 cm long wavelength shifting (WLS) fibers (BCF 99-29AA) glued into grooves in the BC404. Average yield was measured with cosmic rays to be about 43 p.e. / MeV . Performance of extruded plastic scintillation counters developed for sandwich detectors of photons for the KOPIO experiment are also described. For a 7 mm thick counter with 4.3 m long WLS fibers spaced at 7 mm , a light yield of 18.7 p.e ./ MeV and time resolution of 0.71 ns were obtained. A prototype photon veto module consisting of 10 layers of 7 mm thick extruded plastic slabs interleaved with 1 mm lead sheets was tested.

Abstract The π0 detector constructed for the T-violation search experiment E246 at KEK is described. It consists of 768 CsI(Tl) crystals with PIN photodiode readout. The crystals are assembled in a tight barrel with holes for muons entering the magnetic spectrometer. The design and performance of the calorimeter are presented. The average light yield of 11u2008000xa0p.e./MeV and average equivalent noise level of 63xa0keV (bench test) were obtained for the CsI(Tl) modules used in the calorimeter. The coherent noise was found to be about 11xa0keV per a module. A readout electronics has been specifically developed for the high counting rate environment of the experiment. A π0 invariant mass resolution of 9.9xa0MeV (σ) was obtained for the whole detector, including regions around the muon holes. A time resolution of 3.8xa0ns (rms) was achieved in the photon energy range of 10–200xa0MeV.
