We propose a new bidirectional dense wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM)-based passive optical network using optical carrier suppression and separation technique to generate both upstream and downstream wavelength channels from a single laser. Thirty-two DWDM channels have been generated, and symmetric 10-Gb/s data transmission of a wavelength pair has been demonstrated.

A novel wavelength-division multiplexing passive optical network architecture with the capability to provide triple-play services (TPS) with a source-free optical network unit has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated. TPS provision with two 2.5-Gb/s, 10-Gb/s downstream signals and 10-Gb/s upstream signals per channel has been successfully realized

We report the bi-directional transmission of 8x10Gb/s signals using an in-line SOA over 80km SMF-28 with matching DCF for the first time. Our results suggest very promising applications for bi-directional transmission in metro and access networks with simple configuration and low cost.

A novel WDM-PON architecture with centralized lightwave source in the optical line terminal (OLT) for providing triple play services has been proposed and demonstrated. Triple play service provision with 2.5 Gbit/s video signals, 10 Gbit/s downstream signals, and 10 Gbit/s upstream signals per channel has been successfully realized.

A new multistage scheme for dense wavelength division multiplexed passive optical networks (DWDM PON) is proposed. This scheme is realized by cascading optical interleavers with increasing periodicities. Downstream transmission of a DWDM comb consisting of four 10 Gb/s channels is demonstrated in the proposed multistage network. We also show a scheme to provide upstream transmission. Experimental results show that this technique has the potential to support many groups of customers located at various distances from the central office.

The use of SOAs as in-line amplifiers in WDM systems leads to crosstalk as a result of cross-gain modulation. Constant intensity modulation format such as differential phase-shift-keying is in principle immune to XGM-induced crosstalk in SOAs. We report the reduction of crosstalk in a bi-directional system and successfully realize 16/spl times/10 Gb/s DWDM signals transmission over 80 km SMF-28 using DPSK modulation format for the first time.

An error-free DPSK DWDM bi-directional transmission of 8/spl times/10 Gb/s signals using an in-line SOA over 80 km SMF-28 with matching DCF is demonstrated. The results suggest promising application for bi-directional transmission in metro and access network with simple configuration and low cost.

We have performed both experimental and numerical analyses of interleaved bidirectional transmission of 16 times 10-Gb/s dense-wavelength-division-multiplexed (DWDM) signals using differential-phase-shift-keying (DPSK) modulation format and in-line semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs). The constant intensity of DPSK-modulated DWDM signals enabled us to mitigate the crosstalk effects in the bidirectional SOA. We have demonstrated error-free bidirectional transmission of 16 channels over an 80-km single-mode fiber (SMF) with matching dispersion-compensating fiber and in-line amplification provided by an SOA. SOAs can be used for bidirectional transmission if the facet reflections can be controlled. In order to understand further the effect of the SOA facet reflectivity on transmission results, we developed a simulation model for our system. Based on the good agreement between our simulation and experimental results, we have found out that the system reflections can be minimized by careful optimization of the bias current and reflectivity of the SOA
