The interplay between formal project memberships and informal advice seeking in knowledge-intensive firms: A multilevel network approach

Abstract In this study we investigate the interplay between knowledge workers’ formal project team memberships and their informal interactions from a multilevel network perspective. Conceptualizing knowledge workers’ affiliation with project teams as a membership network and their interactions as an advice network, we discuss how shared project team memberships as well as multiple memberships influence patterns of informal exchange in knowledge-intensive organizations. To empirically determine the impact of formal organization on informal exchange we apply exponential random graph models for multilevel networks to relational data collected on 434 R&D employees working on 218 project teams in a high-tech firm in Germany. Our results show that employees sharing project memberships create advice ties to each other but do not exchange advice reciprocally. In addition, we find a negative relationship between having a high number of project memberships and informally seeking or providing advice.

Knowledge Networks in High-Tech Clusters: A Multilevel Perspective on Interpersonal and Inter-organizational Collaboration

This study contributes to research on knowledge networks in high-tech clusters by adding a multilevel perspective. We show that while informal individual-level and formal organizational-level knowledge networks created by nested actors partly follow their own structural logic, they are at the same time logically intertwined. Interpersonal knowledge ties influence the maintenance of formal R&D collaborations and vice versa. To fully understand knowledge exchange in high-tech clusters it is therefore necessary to take a multilevel network perspective. Our study shows how these organizational-level and individual-level knowledge networks are mutually influential. Focusing on knowledge networks emerging in the context of regional clusters, we highlight how R&D collaborations among organizations impact the interpersonal exchange of knowledge among managers and researchers and vice versa. Taking a multilevel network perspective, we extend the existing understanding of knowledge networks by demonstrating that individuals who are willing to share their knowledge with colleagues belong to organizations involved in many R&D collaborations. These managers and their organizations thus benefit from each others’ central positions in the networks by having access to extensive sources of external knowledge. However, the opposite holds true when managers and researchers informally ask for knowledge from many of their colleagues. Our results show that extensive knowledge-seekers belong to organizations with fewer formal R&D collaborations. This can either be a sign of them trying to compensate for the lack of organizational-level collaborations or that they are harming their organizations’ chances to find collaboration partners. Finally, if two organizations collaborate on a joint R&D project there is a good chance that their managers and researchers also informally exchange knowledge with each other. Formal and informal knowledge networks thus overlap and open up the potential to realize synergies. We draw conclusions about whether individuals acquire knowledge independent of the opportunity structures provided by their organizations and thus fully exploit the possibilities provided by clusters.

Customer segmentation in retailing based on retail brand patronage patterns

In this study, we propose an alternative method for customer segmentation based on households’ retail brand portfolios. We suggest blockmodeling, a method that is rooted in social network analysis, to identify homogeneous groups of customers being characterized by similar patronage patterns. In a second step, we combine this method with psychometric analyses to examine group differences based on sociodemographic and purchasing behavior variables. To illustrate our approach, we use a sample of 500 households out of a panel data set of 36,502 German households in the fast-moving consumer goods sector. The findings of our analyses yield support for our assumption that our methodology, taking into account the relationship between households and the different retail brands they patronize, provides a broader understanding of the antecedents of households’ multiple store patronage strategies, leading eventually to a new form of customer segmentation.

The effect of structural embeddedness on start-up survival: a case study in the German biotech industry

The knowledge about how informal and interpersonal relationships existing between managers help start-up companies to survive is still limited. Specifically, it is unclear which characteristics of a start-ups embeddedness in informal managerial networks will enhance its chances to survive in the long term. In this study, I systematically investigate several of such characteristics in a regional biotech network in Germany. Among others, the results reveal that being embedded in dense cliques of mutually connected partners positively affects a firms chances to survive whereas brokerage does not seem to influence firm survival.

Entrepreneurial orientation, network brokerage, and firm performance

Arguing that entrepreneurial firms will adopt different behavioural strategies than their competitors, we find that firms exhibiting high levels of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) are more likely to obtain brokerage positions in their networks to external partners. Acting as brokers allows entrepreneurial firms to benefit with respect to the acquisition of important resources such as information and knowledge, which ultimately has positive effects on their performance. In other words, network brokerage represents an important strategic behaviour allowing firms to translate their EO into higher performance levels. Using data from 82 high-tech companies, we find that consistent with our theoretical assumption network brokerage partially mediates the EO-performance relationship and hence represents a missing link when studying the performance-related effects of EO.

The Firm’s Knowledge Network and the Transfer of Advice among Corporate Inventors

Knowledge networks consisting of links between knowledge elements and social networks composed of interactions between inventors both play a critical role for firm innovation. Taking a multilevel network approach, this study integrates research on the two types of networks and investigates how the knowledge network of a firm influences work-related interactions among its inventors. To this end, we associate inventors with specific knowledge elements in the firm’s knowledge network and examine how this association affects the inventors’ popularity and activity in a work-related advice network. Empirically, we combine survey data on 135 inventors working in a multinational high-tech firm with information derived from the firm’s 1031 patents. Results from multilevel exponential random graph models (ERGM) show that different dimensions of the inventors’ knowledge derived from the knowledge network shape their embeddedness in the advice network in unique ways. Implikationen und praktische Fragestellungen

Kapitel 5 diskutiert einige praxisbezogene Implikationen, die sich im Rahmen der Anwendung von Netzwerkanalysen in Unternehmen ergeben. Zunachst wird in Abschn. 5.1 der Frage nachgegangen, warum auf netzwerkanalytischen Verfahren aufbauende Strukturanalysen in der Praxis trotz der zahlreichen Vorteile bislang so selten angewandt werden. Hierauf aufbauend werden im zweiten Abschnitt des Kapitels einige ethische Aspekte der Durchfuhrung von Strukturanalysen im Allgemeinen und netzwerkanalytischer Verfahren im Besonderen thematisiert. Schlieslich wird in Kap. 5.3 ein vierstufiges Modell vorgestellt, das eine idealtypische Anwendung netzwerkanalytischer Strukturuntersuchungen vorstellt. Das vierstufige Modell thematisiert nicht nur einzelne Aspekte und Fragestellungen, die sich im Zusammenhang mit der Erhebung, Analyse und Nutzung netzwerkanalytischer Beziehungsdaten ergeben. Es propagiert vielmehr das kontinuierliche Monitoring der Veranderungen von Beziehungsstrukturen in und zwischen Unternehmen im Zeitverlauf und verdeutlicht die damit einhergehenden Moglichkeiten und Vorteile fur Unternehmen.

Theoretische und methodische Konzepte zu Netzwerkstrukturen in und zwischen Unternehmen

Das zweite Kapitel beinhaltet eine Darstellung theoretischer und methodischer Grundlagen zu intra- und interorganisationalen Unternehmensnetzwerken. Neben einer Diskussion der konzeptionellen Grundlagen von Unternehmensnetzwerken (2.1) wird in Abschn. 2.2 der Frage nachgegangen, welche Nutzenformen mit Beziehungen in und zwischen Unternehmen einhergehen konnen und welche Arten von Kosten im Rahmen des Aufbaus und Unterhalts solcher Beziehungen entstehen. Dies fuhrt im Weiteren zu einer Beurteilung von Netzwerkstrukturen unter simultaner Berucksichtigung von Nutzen und Kosten (Kap. 2.3). Ferner werden in Abschn. 2.4 Moglichkeiten und Ansatze zur Gestaltung von Netzwerkstrukturen diskutiert und anschliesend methodische Ansatze zur Untersuchung von Unternehmensnetzwerken vorgestellt (Kap. 2.5). Im letzten Abschn. 2.6 dieses Kapitels erfolgt eine grundlegende Darstellung der in den Fallstudien angewendeten Methoden der Netzwerkanalyse, wobei sowohl grafische als auch analytisch-statistische Verfahren vorgestellt werden.

Einführung und Problemstellung

Das einleitende Kapitel geht zunachst der Frage nach, weshalb Netzwerke in der jungeren Zeit zu einem solch popularen Thema geworden sind, und grenzt Unternehmensnetzwerke von anderen Netzwerkarten ab. Aus konzeptioneller Sicht werden Unternehmensnetzwerke ihrerseits differenziert in Netzwerkstrukturen innerhalb der Grenzen eines Unternehmens (intraorganisationale Netzwerke) und Netzwerke zwischen Unternehmen (interorganisationale Unternehmensnetzwerke). Ausfuhrlich werden die Unterschiede diskutiert, die sich zwischen der Behandlung von Netzwerkthemen in der Managementliteratur einerseits und wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen und Veroffentlichungen andererseits ergeben. Wahrend fur zahlreiche managementorientierte Veroffentlichung ein fast schon enthusiastischer Umgang mit den Themen „Netzwerke“ und „Vernetzung“ festgestellt werden kann, insbesondere was den Grad der Vernetzung betrifft, liegen sehr viel differenziertere wissenschaftliche Ergebnisse vor, aus denen sich jedoch vielfaltige Erkenntnisse auch fur den unternehmenspraktischen Umgang mit Unternehmensnetzwerken ableiten lassen. Schlieslich werden die Zielsetzungen sowie der inhaltliche Aufbau des Buchs vorgestellt.

Schlussbemerkungen und Fazit

Das abschliesende Kapitel fasst die wesentlichen Erkenntnisse zusammen, die sich aus den konzeptionellen Ausfuhrungen einerseits sowie aus den acht Fallstudien andererseits gewinnen lassen. Daruber hinaus werden einige administrative Aspekte angesprochen, welche die Durchfuhrung netzwerkanalytischer Untersuchungen in der Unternehmenspraxis erleichtert. Insbesondere werden Masnahmen diskutiert, mit deren Hilfe die Unterstutzung der betroffenen Mitarbeiter und Unternehmensbereiche gewonnen werden kann.
