The article describes a knowledge model, oriented to the asynchronous mode of distance learning. The formalization of the knowledge model for a given domain, the operations on the knowledge and the algorithm of the knowledge model creation are submitted. All received decisions can be realized in a program environment compatible with the SCORM standard. The described methodology, based on a generalized knowledge model, enables to develop a distance learning course mainly for the fundamental knowledge. In this paper we describe the methodology and illustrate its use through a project to develop a distance learning course for a queuing system. Moreover, a practical application is proposed based on the eQuality project.

The decision about curriculum modification usually takes place at the knowledge level, mainly with consideration of individual academic staff competences and qualifications. However, traditional approaches to cost estimation of curriculum modification are focused on material resources only. In this paper we present a cost estimation method and decision model for curriculum modification in educational organizations. The proposed method works at the knowledge level and employs competence sets as knowledge representation models in educational organizations. Authors used the theory of hierarchical, multilevel systems in order to define the model of the decision-making process of curriculum modification and its dimension. Basing on this and also using a fuzzy competence model the cost estimation algorithm in the form of a group competences expansion algorithm is proposed. The algorithm focuses on the cost of staff competence expansion caused by the knowledge development process.

In the article authors propose an extended ontological model for distance learning, concerning pedagogical and cognitive requirements of the teaching/learning process as well as environmental requirements represented by SCORM standard. The main characteristic of the dedicated ontological model is reusability, which manifests itself in the possibility of adapting the knowledge model to different contexts and for different users by simply enabling knowledge sharing and knowledge management. Additionally, the article contains case studies (SCORMs course) presenting the proposed model in action.

Abstract The paper presents basic guidelines on developing a flexible modeling complex for operator support systems of a nuclear power plant unit with the VVER-type (water-moderator / water-coolant) reactor, as well as models of calculating the dynamics of neutron and physical processes of the VVER-1000 (1000 megawatt) reactor in order of application within the flexible modeling complex (FMC).

In presented book the Intelligent Open Learning Systems (IOLS) are proposed, described, discussed, and evaluated. The IOLS is a system in which traditional methods of online teaching are enhanced through the use of artificial intelligence and cognitive science. This is the main topic of the book. It consists of ten chapters and is divided into three parts. The first part concentrates on the Open Learning System (OLS) analysis, in particular: the social and educational meanings of the OLS, the new role of the teacher and the new requirements regarding the structure of didactic material. Moreover, the cybernetic model of student, teacher and computer collaboration is presented, the teaching-learning process content and its main characteristics are discussed, and the system based approach to the OLS design is proposed. The second part is focused on the problem of knowledge modeling in the OLS based on the ontology and the competence approaches and leading to the learning object concept and competence management in open systems. The third part describes applications of the OLS in the virtual laboratory for competence transfer, the community-built system of distance learning network, and the AGH student city the real-life application of the OLS concept. The authors research findings presented in the book should be useful in various applications related to knowledge management, e-learning systems and information systems.

Abstract An approach, based on queuing modeling and simulation, to resource allocation for a distributed production system is examined in the paper. The problem is formulated as an objective function minimization for a queuing network. The optimization is based on the combination of analytical modeling and simulation. The analytical model is used for primary evaluation and branching for the optimization algorithm. The simulation is used for validation of analytical results and algorithm stop decision. Due to the constant development of expert systems, broadening of the application area of decision support algorithms, and together with the appearance of new organizational structures, which were defined in world literature as knowledgebase organization, more and more often we come across the concept of competence in the context of information systems.

In the knowledge-base organization the Intellectual Capital is derived from the different form of knowledge owned by the organization. The knowledge is stored mainly in the employee’s mind (tacit knowledge) and knowledge repositories (explicit knowledge). The authors assume that the increasing knowledge repository content enlarges the organization’s intellectual capital. In the proposed model the moderator and employee work together in order to fill up the repository with high quality content. Proposed motivation model is deigned to take the interest of both sides into consideration and motivate both sides as well. As the reference model the motivation model of cooperation between students and the teacher in educational organization is applied.

This chapter is devoted to one of the main problems in serving external orders in a corporate network of publishing services. This problem was already examined in our previous publications, but only in the case of a star network structure. In this chapter, the problem of total production cost minimisation for a general network structure, given by a digraph, is examined.

The development of the stochastic approach, based on queueing models and simulation, to optimize of resources allocation, in distributed production networks (DPN), is examined in the paper. The task of performance optimization of DPN is formulated as a non-linear integer programming problem with stochastic parameters. In our previous works, a branch and bound algorithm based on sequential use of queueing models and simulation is proposed. The analytical models are used for Lower Bound determination and choice of the optimal branching direction. The simulation is used for validation of analytical results and for computation of Upper Bound and stop condition of the algorithm. The developed methods have been used for optimization of corporate computer and telecommunication networks, High-Tech assembly manufacturing, and a printing and publishing company. In this paper, we show a new model and some additional results of simulation study for validation of models used.
