The aging of the population is associated with important social and economic changes, as well as with changes in the epidemiological profile and demands of public health services. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify factors that contributed to individual, social, and programmatic vulnerability of the elderly people. A qualitative, descriptive study was carried out through a systematic review and synthesis of the literature about aging and vulnerability. The vulnerability of the aging population requires appropriate social and professional responses. There is a need to reflect upon health practices related to the prevention of injuries and promotion of health of the aging population. The aging of the population is associated with important social and economic changes, as well as with changes in the epidemiological profile and demands of public health services.
