32/spl times/10 Gbit/s transmission over 8000 km using hybrid Raman-erbium doped fiber optical amplifiers

A 32/spl times/10 Gbit/s transmission experiment over 8000 km has been carried out using hybrid optical amplifiers composed of Raman and erbium doped fiber amplifiers. Active gain equalization based on amplification has been also demonstrated.

32/spl times/10 Gb/s transmission over 6150 km with a 50 GHz wavelength spacing

The transmission of 32 wavelengths with a 50-GHz spacing and modulated at 10 Gbit/s has been demonstrated over 6150 km. The bit error ratio of the 32 channels is 5.10/sup -9/.

Robustness of WDM submarine transmission to degraded conditions

In conclusion, after optimization of the repeater output power, no degradation in case of channel failure was observed in a 6000-km 8 X 2.5 Gbit/s WDM transmission. The SNR degradation induced by cable loss increase and pump failures on a 4 X 2.5 Gbit/s 4600-km transmission nas only 1 dB higher for the upper wavelengths compared to the lower wavelengths.
