OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to histopathologically evaluate the effects of pamidronate and zoledronate on the mandible in an animal model. STUDY DESIGN Sixty female Sprague-Dawley rats were used in this study. Animals were divided into 6 groups (10 per group): control-1 (C1), injected with saline solution for 6 weeks; zoledronate-1 (ZA1), injected with zoledronate for 6 weeks; pamidronate-1 (PA1), injected with pamidronate for 6 weeks; control-2 (C2), injected with saline solution for 8 weeks; zoledronate-2 (ZA2), injected with zoledronate for 8 weeks; and pamidronate-2 (PA2), injected with pamidronate for 8 weeks. No dental procedures were performed on the animals. Rats were killed 2 days after the end of drug therapy, and the posterior and anterior mandible and femur of each rat were evaluated histopathologically. RESULTS Histological examination revealed inflammation limited to the posterior mandible of the ZA2 and PA2 groups; the anterior mandible and femur were not affected. Soft tissue necrosis was evident in one rat in the ZA2 group. CONCLUSION Specific, bisphosphonate-associated inflammatory bony and soft tissue changes were observed in the mandible, suggesting that these drugs may set the stage for altered healing associated with the development of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.

A solitary fibrous tumour is a pleural tumour which may rarely be detected at non-pleural sites. In this report, the case of a solitary fibrous tumour arising from the sublingual salivary gland is described.

Background and Aim: Many studies have reported poor results with standard first‐line treatment for Helicobacter pylori. Second‐line regimens that may overcome bacterial resistance can minimize side‐effects and optimize compliance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of proton pump inhibitor (PPI) and bismuth subcitrate‐based quadruple therapy, after failure of a PPI plus clarithromycin and amoxicillin as first‐line therapy.

Our objective was to compare the collagen and muscle content of the round ligament of uteri in women with pelvic organ prolapse. We evaluated the tissue samples obtained from the round ligaments of 22 patients with uterine prolapse who underwent vaginal hysterectomy (group A, study) and from 26 patients with no pelvic relaxation in whom total abdominal hysterectomy was performed for benign reasons (group B, controls). Morphometric analysis was performed on histologic cross-sections of the round ligament. Sections from each sample were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and Masson’s trichrome methods. A computer system was used for morphometric measurements. We used independent samples t-test or Mann-Whitney U test to investigate the difference between the two groups. It was found that the smooth muscle fraction of the round ligament in women with uterine prolapse was significantly decreased compared with that of healthy control subjects and concluded that decreased smooth muscle content may be an important pathogenetic factor in uterine prolapse.

A case of an odontogenic fibroma with unusual histopathological features is described. The tumour exhibited numerous, plump, stellate fibroblasts, similar to those found in the so-called giant cell fibroma. This finding has not been described previously in odontogenic fibromas. This case also exhibited an unusually large number of calcifications. Neither of these features should affect the biological behavior of this lesion.

A 44‐year‐old female presented with a painful mass in the left parotid gland. Histologic examination revealed the characteristic picture of oncocytic mucoepidermoid carcinoma (OMEC) composed mainly of sheets of oncocytic cells with uniform nuclei and eosinophilic cytoplasm, focally smaller epidermoid cells surrounding poorly formed glandular spaces, and a few cystic structures lined by well‐differentiated mucous cells with intracytoplasmic mucin. Immunohistochemical staining with antimitochondrial antibody showed granular cytoplasmic positivity in oncocytic cells. The resulting histogram for DNA ploidy analysis was of diploid type. OMEC of the parotid gland is a recently described rare neoplasm. Only six cases have been previously reported in the literature. For an accurate approach in the management of patients, OMEC should be considered in the differential diagnosis of oncocytic lesions of the parotid gland, most of which are benign.

BACKGROUND Utilization of fine needle aspiration cytology in the diagnosis of odontogenic tumors seems to have attracted little attention. CASES Ten cytologically diagnosed and histologically confirmed ameloblastoma cases were reviewed in order to establish whether it is possible to obtain a reliable cytologic diagnosis of ameloblastomas. CONCLUSION Attention to the palisading arrangement of ameloblastlike epithelial cells and digitated, stellate reticulum-like cells may lead to the diagnosis of ameloblastoma. Ameloblastomas can be aspirated easily, and the cytologic features may be sufficiently distinctive.

Nasolabial cysts are uncommon primarily unilateral soft tissue lesions located adjacent to the alveolar process above the apices of the maxillary incisors. Clinical features of the nasolabial cysts are smooth fluctuant soft tissue swelling between the upper lip and nasal aperture with obliteration of the nasolabial fold and elevation of the nasal ala. A nasolabial cyst is described including its features on CT and MRI exams.

Osteomas are benign, slow-growing osteogenic tumors commonly occurring in the craniofacial bones. Osteomas are characterized by the proliferation of compact and/or cancellous bone. It can be of a central, peripheral, or extraskeletal type. The peripheral type arises from the periosteum and is rarely seen in the mandible. The lingual surface and lower border of the body are the most common locations of these lesions. They are usually asymptomatic and can be discovered in routine clinical and radiographic examination. In this paper, we presented a large solitary peripheral osteoma located in the buccal surface of the left posterior mandible and causing facial deformity in a 37-year-old woman. Radiographic examination by computed tomography revealed radiopacity with a well-circumscribed, pedunculated mass approximately 3 cm in size. The osteoma was removed surgically, and no recurrence has been observed.
