Separation of X- and Y-bearing human spermatozoa with the sephadex gel-filtration method

Omer Steeno; A Adimoelja; Justine Steeno

By means of the Sephadex gel filtration method we were able to separate a fraction rich in X-bearing human spermatozoa, in contrast with the method of Ericsson et al. (1973), which allows to obtain a fraction rich in Y-bearing sperm. The method, which is simple and not time-consuming, may allow control of sex in cases of expressed sex desire in off-spring.

Occupational Influences on Male Fertility and Sexuality

Omer Steeno; A Pangkahila

Summary: The authors present herewith a survey of occupational influences on male fertility and sexuality. From literature data of the last 15 years, the potential risks of physicale factors (traumatisms, temperature, radiation, micro‐waves), of chemical factors (metals, mineral oils, hormones, pesticides and herbicides, neurotoxins, vinylchloride and analogs, carbondisulfide), of physio(pahto)logical factors (infectious diseases occupationally aquired, low back syndrome) and of psychological factors (stress, alcoholism) are discussed.

Chronobiological Fluctuations in Semen Parameters with a Constant Abstinence Period

This study examined the seasonal variation in three semen parameters (total sperm count, % grade a progressive motility and sperm morphology according to strict criteria) with an identical abstinence period of 24 h. A total of 340 spermiograms of 107 different men enrolled in an intrauterine insemination (IUI) program were examined. To reduce variation due to interindividual disparities in semen quality, differences of each test result from the mean value obtained for that individual were analyzed. Mean values resulted from at least 3 observations during different IUI cycles. Using ANOVA and spectral analysis, no differences in semen parameter results in function of the month of the year were observed. The lack of any significant periodicity may be explained by the large biological variation for individual semen parameters and/or the lack of significant differences regarding light exposure and temperature between summer and winter months in moderate climates.

Adrenal cortical hormones in the spermatic vein of 95 patients with left varicocele.

Omer Steeno; J Koumans; Pieter De Moor

Adrenocortical hormones were measured in the peripheral and spermatic venous blood samples, taken simultaneously at the time of a high vasoligation for left varicocele in 95 patients.

Clinical and physical evaluation of the infertile male: testicular measurement or orchidometry

Omer Steeno

Summary: For the quantitative determination of the testicular size or volume, two groups of apparatus are available: on the one hand, model testes, which are extremely valuable in longitudinal and cross‐sectional studies during the period of pubescence, and on the other hand, measuring devices, with which the testicular dimensions can be specified. The latter instruments are helpful chiefly during the adolescent years and the diagnosis of problems surrounding fertility. The testicular volume can be calculated subsequently from the specific testicular measurements. The formula, for computing the volume of an ellipsoid, seems to be the most suitable for this purpose. Appliances also have been developed, which allow the largest (longitudinal) dimension (in mm) and the testicular volume (in cm3) to be read off simultaneously.

PROTEIN BINDING OF PROGESTERONE STUDIED BY GEL FILTRATION.

P. De Moor; K. Heirwegh; Omer Steeno

Abstract The binding of tritium-labeled progesterone to whole plasma has been studied by means of gel filtration. Two noninteracting binding systems were observed. One of them has a binding capacity of 1.63 μmoles per liter and an association constant of 4.42 liters per μmole. The nature of this fraction is still under study; indirect evidence suggests it is not transcortin, but possibly a β-lipoprotein. The other binding agent has a much larger binding capacity that is significantly different in both sexes, the value in men being 51.0 and in women 26.2 μmoles per liter. The association constants, however, were much smaller, averaging 0.078 liter per μmole in men and 0.122 in women. This binding agent most probably is plasma albumin. Some physicochemical and physiological properties of these binding systems have been investigated.

Solitary or predominantly right-sided varicocele: A possible sign of situs inversus

Guy Wilms; Raymond Oyen; Jan Casselman; P Peene; Omer Steeno; A L Baert

Among more than 850 patients undergoing outpatient sclerotherapy of the internal spermatic vein, only 1 unilateral and 1 predominantly right sided varicocele were encountered. In both patients with this finding a total situs inversus was present, with inversion of normal anatomy, enlarged “right” internal spermatic vein draining into the renal vein, and the “left” internal spermatic vein entering the inferior vena cava directly. Total situs inversus should be considered whenever right-sided varicocele is solitary or predominant.
