Distribution data on the Cephidae (Hymenoptera: Symphyta) fauna of Turkey

The Cephidae, commonly referred to as stem sawflies in the suborder Symphyta of the Hymenoptera, comprise 166 species worldwide (TAEGER & BLANK 2008). In a recent overview, KORKMAZ et al. (2010) listed 25 species from Turkey based on literature records and specimens collected mainly from Central Anatolia. The present paper adds new distribution records and a few species new to Turkey. The material for the present study was collected by sweeping flowering plants with an insect net, mostly by the present authors and mainly in eastern Turkey during 1980-2009. A few specimens were obtained from Malaise traps. Identification of the species was made according to ZHELOCHOVTSEV (1988) and by comparing the specimens with museum collections (Entomology Museum Erzurum, EMET) determined by D. R. SMITH (USA). The material is deposited in EMET.

Check-list of the Argidae fauna (Hymenoptera: Symphyta) of Turkey

Abstract Thirty-two species in four genera of the sawfly family Argidae have been recorded in Turkey. This paper gives an updated list of species together with distribution records from the literature and from personal observations. New localities are given for many species. Five species are reported as new to Turkey, namely Aprosthema bifurca (Klug, 1834), Aprosthema syrmiense (Mocsáry, 1897), Arge pullata (Zaddach, 1859), Arge ustulata (Linnaeus, 1758) and Sterictiphora geminata (Gmelin, 1790). Arge aurata (Zaddach, 1864) is endemic to Turkey.
