[Purpose] Breast cancer-related upper extremity lymph edema is known to cause physical, functional and psychological impairments in women after modified radical mastectomy. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of phase I Complex Decongestive Physiotherapy (CDP) on physical functions and depression levels in women with breast cancer-related upper extremity lymph edema. [Subjects and Methods] Fifty-eight subjects with breast cancer-related upper extremity lymph edema were the subjects of this study. The arm circumference, shoulder range of motion (ROM), muscle strength and depression levels of the subjects were assessed before and after phase I CDP treatment. [Results] After phase I CDP, there was a statistically significant reduction in circumference measurements at all levels of the affected arm. There was not any statistically significant difference in muscle strength after CDP. The shoulder ROM improved after treatment. There was a significant reduction in the Beck Depression Inventory score. A significant positive correlation was found between depression levels and circumference measurement. [Conclusion] Based on the results we suggest that by reducing limb volume, beside improving physical functions, phase I CDP can affect psychological status, especially depression which is very common in women with breast cancer-related upper extremity lymph edema.

ABSTRACT Aims This study was planned to determine the effects of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and its complications on physical and pulmonary functions. Methods: A total of 110 individuals aged 40–65 years were included in the study, 58 with type 2 DM (study group) and 52 without DM (control group). Physical activity level, functional capacity, pulmonary function, and comorbidity levels were compared between the groups. Results: The mean age of the individuals was 52.42 ± 5.88 years. Six-minute walk test distance was 507.2 ± 51.70 m in the study group and 532.23 ± 50.32 m in the control group (p < 0.05, Cohen’s d = 0.49). The pulmonary function test results of the study and control groups were determined as forced vital capacity (FVC) (%): 99.17 ± 14.13 and 104.65 ± 16.01 (p > 0.05), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) (%): 96.78 ± 14.43 and 99.73 ± 15.80 (p > 0.05), and FEV1/FVC ratio: 81.97 ± 4.62 and 80.16 ± 5.27 (p > 0.05), respectively. The Charlson Comorbidity Index scores of the study and control groups were 1.83 ± 0.82 and 0.12 ± 0.32 (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Type 2 DM was associated with lower functional capacity and higher rates of comorbid diseases. Therefore, potential causes of these parameters should be considered in the rehabilitation of type 2 diabetic patients.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: Chronic back pain (CBP) affects physical functions, social life, and quality of life negatively and causes to abnormal behaviors, even sleep disorders as a result of pain. The physical therapy and rehabilitation (PTR) intervention is one of the common nonpharmacological choices in treatment of CBP. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of PTR on pain, disability, depressive symptoms and sleep quality in subjects with CBP. METHODS: Thirty-five subjects (F: 20,M: 15) with CBP for at least six months who applied to a private medical center in Denizli and were referred for PTR were included in this study. The subjects received 15 séance PTR for 5 days a week. The demographic data of subjects were recorded. The pain level was measured by Visual Analog Scale (VAS), the disability level was measured by Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and the depressive symptoms were assessed by Beck Depression Scale (BDS). Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality. RESULTS: The average age of subjects was 47,83± 14,35 (min: 27max: 65) years. When the results of VAS, ODI, BDS and PSQI were compared, a significant difference was found (p<0,05). The pain and disability levels, and the depressive symptoms of subjects significantly decreased and an increase in minimally deteriorated sleep quality was observed after PTR. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: We think that PTR, including superficial/deep thermal therapy, physical modalities and exercise, is an effective choice of treatment which increase functionality and also can have positive effects on depressive symptoms and sleep quality

OBJECTIVE The musculoskeletal pain is one of the leading health problems among employed women. The aim of our study was to examine musculoskeletal pain, depression and quality of life (QOL) among employed women and find out the differences with unemployed women. METHODS A hundred and fifty employed women and 151 housewives were included in our study. We used visual analog scale (VAS) for the assessment of pain, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) for the depressive symptoms and Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) for the assessment of QOL. RESULTS The ratio of musculoskeletal pain among employed women and unemployed women were found as 42.5% and 57.5% respectively. A mild level of depression was found among employed women whereas moderate and vigorous level of depression were found among unemployed women. There were significant differences in terms of depression and QOL parameters. When the correlations of pain, depression and QOL were analyzed, significant high positive relationships between spinal, lower extremity, upper extremity pain levels and BDI and NHP were found only in housewives. CONCLUSIONS Lower levels of depression among employed women can give the idea that social ambience at work place, focusing at work and economic independence play a role in decreasing depression.
