DC Bus Voltage Regulation of an Active Power Filter Using a Fuzzy Logic Controller

Ilhami Colak; Ramazan Bayindir; Orhan Kaplan; Ferhat Tas

In this paper, a novel control algorithm has been proposed to regulate the DC bus voltage of a single phase shunt active power filter using a fuzzy logic controller. The DC bus voltage of a shunt active power filter should be controlled to compensate the filter losses on the grid. In many industrial applications, a PI controller is generally used to regulate the DC bus voltage of shunt active power filters. In the novel control algorithm the error signal caused by the filter losses has been computed firstly. Then this error signal has been compensated using the fuzzy logic controller. Simulation model of the shunt active power filter with the proposed control algorithm has been designed using the Matlab/Simulink/Simpower and the Fuzzy Toolbox. The simulation results show that the fuzzy logic controller compensates filter losses on the grid and improves the power quality by reducing the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the supply current and increasing the power factor.

Country study on renewable energy sources in Turkey

Orhan Kaplan; Uraz Yavanoglu; Fatih Issi

Renewable energy sources have been an attraction for both researchers and scientists recently. In this study, a survey focused on renewable energy sources in Turkey has been presented. The survey has been conducted by researchers working in different scientific disciplines registered to Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey. The questionnaires have been prepared in order to explore the opinions of researchers related to renewable energy issues. Turkey has important potential on account of renewable energy sources as well as geographical location has been suitable for the use of those sources simultaneously. However, Turkey has imported more than half part of its energy and depends on foreign energy supplies. This situation demonstrates that there is large difference between estimated renewable energy potential and the amount of renewable energy employed in Turkey. The aim of this article is to reveal the reasons of this gap through the perspective of academics. The results of survey are indicated the attitudes of researchers studying in several fields about the renewable energy issues of Turkey.

Microcontroller based electrical machines training set

Ramazan Bayindir; Ersan Kabalci; Orhan Kaplan; Yunus Emre Öz

In this study, a multi-purpose training set has been designed and implemented as an auxiliary learning tool to teach the main concepts of electrical motors for students who attend the vocational and technical education. The system deals with three types of electrical motors as direct current (DC) motor, stepper motor and servo motor, which are controlled by a microcontroller. Although most of the systems in classical laboratories are focused on experimental activities without theoretical substructure, the system presented integrates the hands-on activities with the theoretical information. For this purpose, the theoretical information related to each electrical motor in the system has been given to the students firstly. Then, proficiency of the students has been evaluated using test questions related to the topic. Finally, if the students are reached to the desired level, they can perform the experimental studies using the system in order to efficiently reinforce the theoretical courses they have already learned. Combining the theoretical information with the application studies can be shown as an advantage of this study.

The analysis of wind speed potential and energy density in ankara

Orhan Kaplan; Murat Temiz

In this study, the wind speed potential and energy density of Ankara city are evaluated. Wind speed data is collected from meteorological measuring station located at 15 meters height above the ground level between 2013 and 2015 and it is recorded at the every 10 minutes. Two parameters Weibull distribution is one of the most used methods to analyze wind speed characteristic of an area. This study aims to compare two different methods which are used to determine parameters of Weibull distribution and evaluate the wind energy potential of Ankara. Comparative analysis of the accuracy of the methods is carried out statistically using Root-Mean Square Error (RMSE) and analysis of variance (R2). In the study, Matlab is used to execute developed scripts based on mathematical models for estimation of Weibull parameters, and perform statistical analyses.

Necmi Altin; Orhan Kaplan; Saban Ozdemir

In last decades frequently use of non-linear loads has caused many power quality problems in power systems. The active power filters are developed to overcome these problems by using some power electronics. This paper presents a three phase shunt active power filter based on three-level neutral point clamped inverter structure. In this study, the novel approach based on to determine the losses occurring inverter throughout a period is proposed. The proposed approach reveals unwanted active current component with fundamental frequency contained in the compensation current which causes oscillation and fall of the DC voltage level of shunt active power filter. The proportional-integral controller that has been widely used by researchers is used to maintain the reference DC voltage level. The proposed system is modeled with MATLAB/Simulink and simulation studies are carried out. The obtained results from the simulation studies show that the proposed approach is uncomplicated, and cheaper than classical PI control algorithm also it is effective as classical PI control algorithm.

Ilhami Colak; Heinz Wilkening; Gianluca Fulli; Julija Vasiljevska; Fatih Issi; Orhan Kaplan

Smart grid systems, for being profitably implemented, will have to deliver advantageous results to costumers, investors and operators. This can be realised by providing efficient, secure and reliable systems, connecting distributed renewable energy sources and enabling advanced services. The analysis of those potential benefits should consider all the components of the smart grids from the energy sources to the consumers, including the communication and power flows within the system. This study aims to analyse how to reach an efficient energy use with different means (e.g. better management of the energy consumption rate, consumption forecast, and central energy orientation providing the capabilities of smart homes, communication links and electricity grid management centres. To this end, architecture of a small smart grid system including a novel smart home, communication and energy lines, and a small home energy management centre is studied in this paper. Such architecture is envisaged to have a substantial impact on the operation and management of future electricity network addressing issues such as efficient integration of renewable power sources and emerging consumer behaviour.

ANN controlled single phase inverter for solar energy systems

Mehmet Demirtas; Ipek Cetinbas; Serif Serefoglu; Orhan Kaplan

In this study, a single phase inverter is simulated, designed and implemented for solar-powered systems. The use of inverters converting DC voltage generated to AC voltage with intelligent algorithms is a growing practice recently. Unlike classical algorithms, a novel control algorithm based on artificial neural network has been developed and implemented for the inverter. Artificial neural network training is done with FannTool Program. The inverter capable of learning and making decision changes the switching rates for the specified input and output value. Consequently, the inverter also provides constant output value for variable loads.
