Abstract 1 H and 19 F NMR spectra along with GC studies of the oxidizing solution obtained from the reaction of F 2 with NaOAc, support the notion that a single compound with molecular structure CH 3 COOF indeed exists.

Abstract Bromine trifluoride in a mixture with elemental bromine can be used as a bromination agent for deactivated aromatic compounds. The method comprises reacting an equimolar mixture of elemental bromine and bromine trifluoride with the aromatic compound, practically at room temperature. In all cases demonstrated, the reaction is instantaneous and no catalyst is required. In most cases, when electron withdrawing group is attached to the aromatic ring, the bromination takes place at the expected meta position. The bromination method can be particularly applicable when extremely deactivated rings like dinitrobenzenes and nitroacetophenones have to be brominated.
