Abstract A novel alkaloid, maxonine, with an indole-pyrido-naphthyridine skeleton, has been isolated from Simira maxonii . Its structure was elucidated on the basis of 2D NMR spectral data.

AbstractIntroductionVerbena littoralis H. B. K. (Verbenaceae) is the sole species of this genus which grows in Costa Rica. It is a shrub widely used in folk medicine as an effective antidiarrhetic (1). It has also been claimed as a remedy for typhoid fever, for relieving inflammations from insects bites (2) and for cancer (3).
