Comparison of mucus glands in the tracheobronchial tree of man and animals.

Rolando V. Goco; Milton B. Kress; Otto C. Brantigan

Patients with well-established primary idiopathic obstructive pulmonary emphysema present symptoms characterized by dyspnea and annoying morning cough productive of a small amount of tenacious sputum, which is expectorated with extreme difficulty. The slightest exertion, such as preparing the morning toilet, shaving, brushing the teeth, and bathing, is usually accompanied by dyspnea and exhaustion. These patients, after a surgical procedure consisting of the reduction of the lung volume, by resecting functionally useless lung tissue and by denervation of the bronchopulmonary system, show significant clinical improvement>” The sputum is less viscid and more easily expelled. The improvement in breathing that follows enables these patients to care for themselves. Many of these patients are converted from pulmonary cripples to a state of well-being which permits them to return to useful occupation as a result of improvement in their pulmonary function. I t seems that a significant factor in the improvement is due to a change in the character of the uninfected bronchial secretion which is brought about by atrophy of the bronchial glands, a result of the bronchopulmonary denervation. A desire to study the effects of bronchopulmonary denervation on the bronchial glands stimulated the work that is being presented.
