Experimental study of transportion characteristic of charged particle in a laboratory scale high velocity electrostatic precipitator

Chengwu Yi; Dou Peng; Chundu Wu; Ou Hongxiang; Qu Wenming; Ma Shuai

The efficiency of dust collection in an electrostatic precipitator is mainly determined by its electric operational parameters which depends on the design and arrangement of the corona and collecting electrodes. In this paper, experiments of fly ash purification are carried using the transverse plate ESP system (the laboratory scale transverse plate electrostatic precipitator self-designed). The influence factors of the ion concentration, such as the input energy density, the interval of dust collection plates, the gas velocity, have been studied experimentally. The results showed that the gas ion concentration and its transporting rate in the discharge space can be enhanced by increasing the gas velocity and its momentum in the electrostatic precipitator, because the high gas velocity can effectively prevent the gas ion neutralization in the discharge space. The study indicited that the gas ion concentration can be enhanced 1–2 magnitudes in the discharge space by increasing the gas velocity, therefore the collection efficiency can be effectively raised. Furthermore, the drift velocity of the dust and the volumetric flow of flue gas can be enhanced when the gas velocity increased. Therefore, the volume of transverse plate electrostatic precipitator can be reduced by 30∼40% compared with the conventional construction ESP and its miniaturization is realized.

In this study, lime-hydrate (Ca(OH)2) desulfurizer was treated by plasma with strong ionization discharge of a dielectric barrier. The removal of SO2 from simulated flue gas was investigated. The principles of SO2 removal are discussed. Several factors affecting the efficiency of SO2 removal were studied. They included the ratio of calcium to sulfur (Ca/S), desulfurizer granularity, residence time of the flue gas, voltage applied to the discharge electrode in the plasma generator, and energy consumption. Experimental results indicate that the increase in Ca/S ratio, the applied voltage and discharge power, the residence time, and the reduction in the desulfurizer granularity all can raise the SO2 removal efficiency. The SO2 removal efficiency was up to 91.3% under the following conditions, namely a primary concentration of SO2 of 2262 × 10−6 (v/v) in the emission gas, 21%(v/v) of oxygen, 1.8% (v/v) of water, a Ca/S ratio of 1.48, a residence time of 2.8 s, a 3.4 kV voltage and a 10 kHz frequency power applied to the discharge electrodes in the plasma generator, and a flow rate of 100 m3/h for emission gas.

Ou Hongxiang; Yi Chengwu; Qu Wenming; Wang Songmei; Li Qianqian; Cai Jing; Ma Li

Effects of formaldehyde degradation using strong ionization discharge were studied. A majority of gas molecules in the air such as O2 and H2O were ionized and maken into OH ·of high concentration using strong ionization discharge method to carry out formaldehyde removal experiment without catalyst and absorbent. Some factors such as exerted voltage, initial concentration, fume flow, which affect the formaldehyde removal efficiency were studied. The orthogonal test design method was applied to optimize the process conditions and the GC-MS method was used to analyse the organic components in the fume. The results indicated that as the exerted voltage increased the degradation efficiency (ŋ) increased. The fume flow played a most important role on the increasing of ŋ. With the fume flow decreased, probabilities of collision and reaction between formaldehyde and active molecules increased. The influence to degradation efficiency decreased in the order: fume flow > voltage > density. Under the optimized conditions, the initial density, exerted voltage and fume flow were 200mg/m3, 3.2kV and 0.2m3/h, respectively, ŋ reached 93.2%. During the process of formaldehyde degradation, theres no other organic gas produced, and ŋ could be higher than 90%.

Biosorption of Pb(II) from aqueous solution by biomass of Neosartorya hiratsukae(M7): Equilibrium and kinetic studies

Ou Hongxiang; Xue Yonglai; Pan Jianming; Yi Chengwu; Zhou Xiao-hua; Wang Qian

The biosorption characteristics of Pb(II) from aqueous solution using freeze-dried biomass of Neosartorya hiratsukae(M7) were investigated as a funtion of pH, contact time and initial concentration. The optimal pH for adsorption of Pb(II) was determined bo be 6.0. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model was found to be well suited for the adsorption process. Langmuir model fitted the equilibrium data better than Freundlich isotherm. The maxium adsorption capacity of M7 according to Langmuir isotherm was 42.55mg g−1 at pH 6.0 and 30°C. FTIR analysis of M7 showed the possible functional groups of M7. Responsible for the lead biosorption were carboxylic, hydroxyl and amine groups etc. SEM analysis demonstrated the microporous structure of the biosorbent while EDX analysis confirmed the adsorption of Pb(II) on the biomass of M7.
