A Multigigabit Millimeter-Wave Communication System With Improved Spectral Efficiency

Val Dyadyuk; John D. Bunton; Joseph Pathikulangara; Rodney Kendall; Oya Sevimli; Leigh Stokes; David Andrew Abbott

This paper describes the details of a new method for improved spectral efficiency in a multigigabit millimeter-wave communication system, and the outdoor and indoor test results of a 6-Gbit/s concept demonstrator in the 81-86-GHz frequency band. Achieved aggregate data with a 2.4-bit/s/Hz spectral efficiency was the fastest wireless transmission published thus far with a carrier-grade bit error rate over a millimeter-wave link.

Val Dyadyuk; John D. Bunton; Rodney Kendall; Joseph Pathikulangara; Oya Sevimli; Leigh Stokes

This paper describes a novel method for improving spectral efficiency in a multi-gigabit mm-wave communication system, and test results of a 6 gigabit per second concept demonstrator in 81-86 GHz frequency band with a 2.4 bits/s/Hz spectral efficiency. Achieved aggregate data was the fastest wireless transmission worldwide with a carrier-grade bit error rate over a mm-wave link using a spectrum efficient modulation method.

A 6 Gbps Millimetre Wave Wireless Link with 2.4 bit/Hz Spectral Efficiency

Val Dyadyuk; Oya Sevimli; John D. Bunton; Joseph Pathikulangara; Leigh Stokes

An all electronic 6 Gbps millimetre wave point-to-point link in the 85 GHz band has been developed. The complete link has been built including RF, IF and digital baseband modules. 8PSK (phase shift keying) modulation has been used to achieve 2.4 bit/Hz spectral efficiency. According to our knowledge this is the highest spectral efficiency to date for a millimeter wave link with a demonstrated 6 Gbps data rate. In this paper we report measured performance of the millimeter wave radios and the link on an outdoor test range of 250 m.

An Integrated Wideband Circularly-Polarized 60 GHz Array Antenna with Low Axial-Ratio

John S. Kot; Nasiha Nikolic; Oya Sevimli

An integrated, circularly-polarized antenna comprising an annular slot and hybrid feed network fabricated on a standard liquid crystal polymer (LCP) substrate is described. The antenna is designed to operate in the WPAN band around 60 GHz. Modeled results for a single element and a 2x2 array are presented. The antenna bandwidth is sufficient to cover the entire WPAN band, and the array antenna has very low axial ratio, better than 0.3 dB across the band.

Thin-film multi-chip-module prototype for millimeter-waves

Oya Sevimli; J. Wiggins; Val Dyadyuk

We have developed a thin-film multi-chip-module process suitable for integrating millimeter-wave MMICs without the use of bond-wires or flip-chip bonds. In this paper, we present the performance of our prototypes incorporating commercial MMICs and show that the method is suitable for V-band operation. To the authors knowledge, this is the first time this approach was successfully demonstrated at V-band.

An 80-120 GHz Sub-Harmonically Pumped Image-Reject Integrated Circuit Mixer

Oya Sevimli; John W. Archer

An 80-120 GHz, sub-harmonically pumped image reject mixer (SHPIRM) was developed and tested. An IF hybrid was integrated with the design to produce a fully monolithic image reject mixer chip. The circuit was fabricated using CSIROs planar GaAs Schottky diode process and the RF performance was measured between 75 and 110 GHz. Throughout the 75-110 GHz band, 11-16 dB of conversion loss and better than 12 dB of image rejection was obtained.
