On the General Class of Two-Sided Power Distribution

Özlem Ege Oruç; Ismihan Bairamov

Abstract Van Dorp and Kotz (2003) introduced a general class of two-sided power distribution. We provide several examples of this distribution by considering a non negative, non decreasing differentiable function g on [0, 1] satisfying g(1) − g(0) = 1. For the considered distributions the maximum likelihood estimation and moment estimation of parameters are obtained. Moments, moment generating functions, and relative entropy are also derived.

Joint Reliability Importance in Coherent Systems With Exchangeable Dependent Components

Serkan Eryilmaz; Özlem Ege Oruç; Volkan Oger

In this paper, a general formula for computing the joint reliability importance of two components is obtained for a binary coherent system that consists of exchangeable dependent components. Using the new formula, the joint reliability importance can be easily calculated if the path sets of the system are known. As a special case, an expression for the joint reliability importance of two components is also obtained for a system consisting of independent and identical components. Illustrative numerical results are presented to compare the joint reliability importance of two components in the bridge system for the two cases when the components are exchangeable dependent and when the components are independent and identical.

An Application of Entropy in Survey Scale

Özlem Ege Oruç; Emel Kuruoğlu; Özgül Vupa

This study demonstrates an application of entropy for information theory in the field of survey scale. Based on computer anxiety scale we obtain that the desired information may be achieved with fewer questions. In particular, one question is insufficient and two questions are necessary for a survey subscale.

BackgroundHand hygiene is one of the most effective attempts to control nosocomial infections, and it is an important measure to avoid the transmission of pathogens. However, the compliance of healthcare workers (HCWs) with hand washing is still poor worldwide. Herein, we aimed to determine the best hand hygiene preference of the infectious diseases and clinical microbiology (IDCM) specialists to prevent transmission of microorganisms from one patient to another.MethodsExpert opinions regarding the criteria that influence the best hand hygiene preference were collected through a questionnaire via face-to-face interviews. Afterwards, these opinions were examined with two widely used multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) methods, the Multi-Attribute Utility Theory (MAUT) and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP).ResultsA total of 15 IDCM specialist opinions were collected from diverse private and public hospitals located in İzmir, Turkey. The mean age of the participants was 49.73 ± 8.46, and the mean experience year of the participants in their fields was 17.67 ± 11.98. The findings that we obtained through two distinct decision making methods, the MAUT and the AHP, suggest that alcohol-based antiseptic solution (ABAS) has the highest utility (0.86) and priority (0.69) among the experts’ choices.ConclusionIn conclusion, the MAUT and the AHP, decision models developed here indicate that rubbing the hands with ABAS is the most favorable choice for IDCM specialists to prevent nosocomial infection.

Aims: The aim of this study is modeled the ratios of export to imports data in Turkey by using nonparametric regression methods. Study Design: This was Spline, Bayesian Spline and Penalized Spline Regression modeling study. Place and Duration of Study: Turkish Statistical Institute. The ratios of export to import data consist of sixty-seven month periods (May 2007 to November 2012). Methodology: In this study, distribution graph of ratios of export to import between 2007 to 2012 years in Turkey is modeled using spline and Bayesian spline regression methods. The results of these regression models are compared. Then Penalized spline regression is examined with Bayesian approach and models are established for the different values of the smoothing parameter which obtained using prior distributions. We proposed a new smoothing parameter using the information content of normal distribution. Under the assumption of the coefficients of basis functions are normally distributed, the new smoothing parameter ( λ*) is defined as the ratio of the

Investigation of Diagnostic Test Performance Using Receiver Operating Characteristic and Fundamental Concepts of Information Theory

Özlem Ege Oruç; Armağan Kanca

Aims: Receive Roperating Characteristic (ROC) curveanda fundamental concept of information theory is directly applicable to evaluation of diagnostic test performance. In this study, the performance of the two diagnosis tests on the field of rheumatic disorder is analyzed byusing receiver operating characteristic and fundamental concepts of information theory. The aims of this study to investigate which diagnosis tests has better performance and to demonstrate which test can be an alternative to gold standard test by carrying out ROC and fundamental concepts of information theory. Study Design: ROC analysis and application of fundamentals concept of information theory
