A fully engineered 5 Gb/s repeaterless long-span transmission system with excellent long term performance is introduced. The transmitting power from an optical power booster was +15.5 dBm with SBS suppression, and an optical preamplifier receiver provided a receiver sensitivity of -38 dBm for 10/sup -9/ BER (or -35 dBm for 10/sup -15/ BER). A Ti:LiNbO/sub 3/ external modulator transmitter allowed dispersion limited repeaterless transmission through 226 km non-DSF (a total dispersion of 4100 ps/nm).<<ETX>>

A successful 10-Gb/s bidirectional transmission experiment is demonstrated at the 1550-nm wavelength through 150 km of dispersion-shifted fiber. Long-term bit error rate performance (BER<10/sup -14/) is achieved in both transmission directions with a fully engineered system.<<ETX>>

We report the successful field demonstration of 10 Gb/s NRZ line rate transmission on the installed TransPacific Cable (TPC-5) Segment G. Using prototype transmitters, receivers and a bit-synchronous 10-GHz polarization scrambler, we achieved long-term error-free transmission with a bit-error rate below 10 on a 4230-km-long installed fiber cable. We also obtained a bit-error-rate as low as 10/sup -15/ for 8460-km transmission. The measured Q-values for 4230-, 8460-, and 12 690-km transmission are 20, 16.5, and 12.5 dB, respectively.

We have demonstrated a successful, error-free 1-Tb/s transmission experiment over 342 km of TrueWave(R) fiber using 40 Gb/s OTDM (optical time-division multiplexing) transmitter and 3R receiver. Fiber chromatic dispersion was effectively compensated for using negative-slope dispersion compensating fiber.

We report field measurements of virtually error-free transmission at 10 Gb/s line rate on the installed Columbus-IIB optically amplified submarine lightwave system. For 2100-km transmission an average experimental Q-factor of 18.8 dB was achieved. An eye margin (EM) of +80 mV at 10/sup -15/ bit-error-ratio (BER) was also measured. For 4200 km transmission the average experimental Q-factor was 16.0 dB. Implications for system operation at 10 Gb/s line rate are discussed.<<ETX>>

In this paper we report on the successful field demonstration of 10-Gbit/s transmission on the newly installed TPC-5G section undersea cable. Using the same prototype 10-Gbit/s transmitters and receiver/regenerators as the ones used in a previous terrestrial field experiment, we have achieved long-term error-free transmission on a 4230-km long cable with a low bit-error-rate.
