Distribution and performance of chemicals injected into trees for the control of fungal diseases

D. R. Clifford; Louise R. Cooke; P. Gendle

Control of Dutch elm disease (DED) and of powdery mildew, by injecting formulations of carbendazim and other compounds into the trunk of elm or apple trees, was limited by irregular distribution of fungitoxicant within the tree. The acid (but not methanol) content of carbendazim formulations influenced protectant activity against DED; no material tested was effective as an eradicant.Thiabendazole hypophosphite was phytotoxic to elms, gave control of DED inferior to carbendazim and was ineffective against powdery mildew on apple.
