Biogenic sedimentation and surface productivity changes in the Southern California Borderlands during the last glacial—interglacial cycle

P Graham Mortyn; Robert C. Thunell

Abstract A variety of geochemical evidence suggests that surface productivity in the California Borderlands region was 1.5–2 times higher during the last glacial relative to the Holocene. High accumulation rates of opaline silica and organic carbon suggest increased glacial productivity, while carbonate accumulation records and C org. C CO 3 ratios point toward a dominantly siliceous plankton community at that time. The observed productivity changes are attributed to a southerly migration of the North Pacific high pressure cell, which resulted in an intensification of the California Current and enhanced upwelling south of 40 °N during the last glacial.
