Electromagnetic Waves in a Chiral Plasma Media

Electromagnetic waves in a magnetized chiral-plasma medium are studied. Using the Maxwells equations and the proposed constitutive relations for a chiral-plasma medium, we derive the vectors E and H equations and from these equations, dispersion relations and E -field polarizations are founded. At high frequency, the obtained results for waves propagating parallely to the external magnetic field in a cold magnetized chiro-plasma are compared with typical results obtained for a cold plasma. For circularly polarized waves, a new mode conversion is founded due to the chiral effect. The chiral rotation is obtained and compared with the Faraday rotation. For waves propagating across the magnetic field, we found a shift of the cut-offs of ordinary and extraordinary waves, on the lower branch of the extraordinary wave mode there is no more bands of forbidden frequencies and the reflection point vanishes. At low frequency the effect of the chiral parameter on the fast and slow wave dispersion relations is moderate.

Field-aligned current model for ultralow-frequency pulsations in the auroral region

We have modeled the auroral magnetised plasma as an inhomogeneous current-carrying plasma and have shown that some features of the magnetic pulsations in that region not yet explained might be clarified by the discrete Alfven eigenmode propagation in that plasma. This mode has the frequency outside of the shear Alfven continuum, and it is a global mode rather then a localised Alfven noneigenmode in inhomogeneous media. Discrete Alfven waves are also described by the two-fluid model finite ω/ω ci , where (ω ci ) is the ion cyclotron frequency. In this paper we show that the current-carrying magnetic field tube in magnetosphere can sustain discrete Alfven modes whose frequency is compatible with the ultralow-frequency pulsations observed

ONDAS ÍON-ACÚSTICAS NO PLASMA MAGNETIZADO

A defasagem entre os sinais da onda no plasma, na maquina linear LISA Foi obtido, medindo-se a variacao temporal entre os sinais de duas sondas eletrostaticas flutuantes, colocadas no eixo, distanciadas entre si de 70 cm (?Z= 70 cm). Para um plasma de helio cuja pressao esteve em torno de 6 x lO-5 Torr, os sinais detectados pelas sondas foram injetados num osciloscopio TEKTRONIX-485, a fim de serem fotografados e analisados. Esta medida nos levou a conclusao da existencia de onda ion-acustica lenta, com ?< ?ci cos?, propagando-se com ângulo ? diferente de 90o com respeito ao campo magnetico (experimentalmente ?=45o) com velocidade de fase Vf = (kbTe/mi.)½cos? , isto e, v = v cos?, em concordância com os trbalhos de Stepanov(1959) e Hirose e outros (1961).

INFLUÊNCIA DO CAMPO MAGNÉTICO B0 NA RESSONÂNCIA HÍBRIDA INFERIOR

Mostramos neste trabalho as carcteristicas do aparato experimental montado no Institudo de Fisica da Universidade Federal Fluminense (Maquina Linear tipo espelho LISA), para produzir e aquecer plasma helio por radio-frequencia e estudar o comportamento do mesmo quando confinado por um campo magnetico de geometria do tipo espelho para as regioes de grande e pequeno volume de ressonância. O plasma e produzido por uma fonte de microonda de fRF=2,45 GHZ e P RF=800Watts a qual pode funcionar em regime continuo ou pulsado.Os parâmetros do plasma sao estudados em funcao do campo magnetico externo B0,para duas configuracoes diferentes: 1-Regiao de grande volume de ressonância; 2- Regiao de pequeno volume de ressonância. Para cada regiao foi feito o mapeamento axial e radial do campo magnetico B0, Bz(r,z) e Br(r,z), a fim de verificar a distribuicao espacial e orbital das particulas obtendo conseuquentemente ainfluenciadeB0 no aquecimento do eletron na ressonância ciclotronica dos eletrons, ECHR, Rapozo et al. /1/, e na ressonância hibrida inferior. O diagnostico foi feito com sonda eletrostatica, plana,movel(axial e radial), sonda Hall, sonda magnetica, bobina diamagnetica e espectrografo.
