The Association regrets the delay in the publication of Calcutta Statistical Association Bulletin, due to circumstances beyond its control. Vol. 27, Nos 105-108 (Jan.-Dec. 1978) is being despatched in December, 197.9. Arrangements for expediting the publication of Vol. 28, Nos. 109-ll2 (Jan.-Dec. 19i9) have been made and the complete volume is expected to come out early in 1980. It is hoped that it would be possible to catch up with the regular publication schedule after that.

There has been a large excess in the value of imports into India over the value of exports from India for a considerable period. This was partly due to large imports of capital goods and machinery required for different projects initiated under the recent plans on completion of which it was expected that the prevailing unfavourable position in respect of balance of trade would improve through reduction in volume of imports and expansion of exports. But the gap between imports and exports steadily increased with the consequence that our foreign exchange reserve depleted gradually and foreign debt mounted steadily.

In test theory we deal with two different types of tests. They are (i) individual and (ii) group. The nature and purpose of these two types of tests are different. Unless we standardise these tests, we cannot use them for any practical purpose. Group tests are constructed for various purposes. When we are concerned with testing the scholastic abilities of different individuals, we use tests which are known as scholastic tests. For recruiting candidates for different vocations, specific group tests are constmcted. The battery of group tests contains a number of tests and each test contains a number of items. This is known as the length of the test. In this article we shall discuss the method of standardisation of group tests and shall use this method to find out whether the papers on English set by the Board of Secondary Education, West Bengal, are standardised tests or not.

P. K. DosE Calcutta University The problem of crop-yield forecast before the harvesting period is very important in the context of national planning. Specially for countries where the production of food is not sufficient for feedi1ig their own people, the pre-harvest assessment of the yield and acreage of the important food-crops is all the more necessary. It is the purpose of this article to discuss both the direct but subjective method, and the indirect but objective method for making such assessment in India and abroad, including a brief review of the statistical technique involved in the Ia tter method.
