Disentangling static and dynamic effects of low breakup threshold in fusion reactions

L. F. Canto; P. R. S. Gomes; J. Lubian; L. C. Chamon; E. Crema

A new technique to analyze fusion data is developed. From experimental cross sections and results of coupled-channel calculations a dimensionless function is constructed. In collisions of strongly bound nuclei this quantity is very close to a universal function of a variable related to the collision energy, whereas for weakly bound projectiles the effects of breakup coupling are measured by the deviations with respect to this universal function. This technique is applied to collisions of stable and unstable weakly bound isotopes.

Abstract The elastic scattering of the radioactive halo nucleus 6 He on 27 Al target was measured at four energies close to the Coulomb barrier using the RIBRAS (Radioactive Ion Beams in Brazil) facility. The Sao Paulo Potential (SPP) was used and its diffuseness and imaginary strength were adjusted to fit the elastic scattering angular distributions. Reaction cross-sections were extracted from the optical model fits. The reduced reaction cross-sections of 6 He on 27 Al are similar to those for stable, weakly bound projectiles as 6,7 Li, 9 Be and larger than stable, tightly bound projectile as 16 O on 27 Al.

New manifestation of the dispersion relation : Breakup threshold anomaly

M. S. Hussein; P. R. S. Gomes; J. Lubian; L. C. Chamon

It is pointed out that the usual threshold anomaly, found operative in the energy behavior of the imaginary and real parts of the optical potential representing the elastic scattering of tightly bound nuclei at near- and below-barrier energies, suffers a drastic qualitative change in the case of the elastic scattering of weakly bound nuclei. Owing to the strong coupling to the breakup channel even at sub-barrier energies, the imaginary potential strength seems to increase as the energy is lowered to below the natural barrier threshold; this is accompanied by a decrease in the real potential strength. This feature is consistent with the dispersion relation. The system {sup 6}Li+{sup 208}Pb is analyzed to illustrate this new phenomenon.

We study the behavior of the fusion, breakup, reaction, and elastic scattering of different projectiles on {sup 64}Zn, at near and above barrier energies. We present fusion and elastic scattering data with the tightly bound {sup 16}O and the stable weakly bound {sup 6}Li, {sup 7}Li, and {sup 9}Be projectiles. The data are analyzed by coupled channel calculations. The total fusion cross sections for these systems are not affected by the breakup process at energies above the barrier. The elastic (noncapture) breakup cross section is important at energies close to and above the Coulomb barrier and increases the reaction cross sections. In addition, we show that the breakup process at near and below barrier energies is responsible for the vanishing of the usual threshold anomaly of the optical potential and gives rise to a new type of anomaly.

Abstract Fusion cross sections were measured for the 9 Be + 27 Al and 19 F + 9 Be , 12C systems, at energies above the Coulomb barrier, in order to investigate the possible effect of fusion hindrance due to the break-up of the weakly bound nuclei. Comparisons with one-dimensional barrier penetration models and with other similar systems, where no break-up is expected to occur, show no evidence of fusion hindrance.

Abstract Soil samples were collected in tierra firme upland and lowland areas of the Km 41 reserve near Manaus (20°30′S and 60°W), in Central Brazilian Amazon, within a 1700 m transect, at eight different depth ranges, from surface to 100 cm. The highest charcoal concentrations were found at the depth range of 20–50 cm. AMS radiocarbon dating of 31 samples were performed at the ANU. The ages of the charcoals were found to vary within the 130 to 2400 years BP range, mostly between 1200 and 1400 years BP, one of the known Holocene dry periods of the Amazon region. The results show that the fires have regional dimensions and are associated with climate regional changes.

The antiquity of the prehistoric settlement of the central-south Brazilian coast

We discus here the prehistoric settlement of the central-south Brazilian coast, and, more specifically, 1 old radiocarbon date obtained for a coastal shellmound, as well as its implications concerning the chronology attributed to the settlement process. The accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) technique was used to determine the (super 14) C age of charcoal from a shellmound on the southern coast of Rio de Janeiro. The resulting age was 7860+ or -80 BP, an unexpected result that reinforces 2 similar previously obtained dates for the same region. Brazilian archaeologists, however, have questioned those 2 dates, because they would predate by some 2000 yr the antiquity consensually accepted for the settlement of the central-south Brazilian littoral.

Absence of fusion suppression due to breakup in the 12C + 7Li reaction

A. Mukherjee; Mahananda Dasgupta; David Hinde; Heiko Timmers; Rachel D Butt; P. R. S. Gomes

Abstract The fusion cross-section for 12C + 7Li has been determined, using a 12 C beam, at an energy near the Coulomb barrier. Previous measurements showed a large discrepancy in cross-sections, leading to conflicting conclusions regarding fusion suppression due to breakup. The present work resolves this discrepancy, and shows that there is no significant inhibition of fusion near the barrier.

Fusion, break-up and elastic scattering of weakly bound nuclei

P. R. S. Gomes; I. Padron; J O Fernández Niello; G. V. Martí; Matias Rodriguez; O. A. Capurro; A. J. Pacheco; J. E. Testoni; A. Arazi; J. Lubian; R. M. Anjos; L. C. Chamon; E. Crema; M. S. Hussein

We describe the behaviour of the fusion, break-up, reaction cross sections and elastic scattering of weakly bound nuclei, at near and above barrier energies. The total fusion cross sections are not affected by the break-up process at this energy regime. The elastic break-up cross sections are important at energies close and above the Coulomb barrier, even in systems with light targets, and increase the reaction cross sections. We also show that the break-up process at near and sub-barrier energies is responsible for the vanishing of the usual threshold anomaly of the optical potential and gives rise to a new type of anomaly, named by us as break-up threshold anomaly.

Continuum-continuum coupling and polarization potentials for weakly bound systems

L. F. Canto; J. Lubian; P. R. S. Gomes; M. S. Hussein

We investigate the influence of couplings among continuum states in collisions of weakly bound nuclei. For this purpose, we compare cross sections for complete fusion, breakup, and elastic scattering evaluated by continuum discretized coupled channel (CDCC) calculations, including and not including these couplings. In our study, we discuss this influence in terms of the polarization potentials that reproduces the elastic wave function of the coupled channel method in single channel calculations. We find that the inclusion of couplings among continuum states renders the real part of the polarization potential more repulsive, whereas it leads to weaker absorption to the breakup channel. We show that the noninclusion of continuum-continuum couplings in CDCC calculations may lead to qualitative and quantitative wrong conclusions.
