Abstract of cultured rabbit renal cortical cells containing more than 50% of proximal tubular cells have been investigated. It was consequently found that epidermal growth factor exhibited the most potent growth promoting activity. In addition, insulin-like growth factor-I and acidic and basic fibroblast growth factor also stimulated the growth of cultured tubular cells, though no effect was observed in platelet derived growth factor. In contrast, transforming growth factor-β was found to be the only growth inhibitor of the tubular cells in the presence of insulin or fibroblast growth factor.

SummaryIn this study transforming growth factorβ (TGF-β)-like activity in human hydrocele fluid was investigated. Inhibition of DNA synthesis of adult rat hepatocytes in primary culture and stimulation of colony formation of normal rat kidney (NRK) fibroblasts, clone 49F in soft agar were observed in all acidified hydrocele fluids and these activites were neutralized by the specific antibody raised against human native TGF-β. In samples obtained from recurrent cases of hydrocele, TGFβ-like activity was observed in its active form (without acidification). These results suggest that human hydrocele fluid contains TGFβ-like activity and that the active form of TGF-β in recurrent hydrocele fluid may be responsible for the recurrence of the disease even after repeated aspiration.

A case of deoxycorticosterone-producing benign adrenocortical tumor is presented. A review of the English literature revealed that this is the second case of deoxycorticosterone-producing adrenocortical adenoma.

The effect of various growth regulators including epidermal growth factor and transforming growth factor-beta on the alkaline phosphatase activity of rabbit renal cortical tubular cells has been investigated in a serum-free culture. As a result, it was found that transforming growth factor-beta, known to be a growth inhibitor of renal tubular cells, increased the alkaline phosphatase activity of the tubular cells dose-dependently and that cycloheximide blocked any increase in the activity of this factor. In contrast, epidermal growth factor decreased the alkaline phosphatase activity in the tubular cells.

A Case of Spontaneous Rupture of Ureter due to Ureteral Stone in G Syndrome

Pabitra Kumar Saha; Toshio Ura; Hiroshi Suzu; Shuji Yamashita; Hiroshi Kanetake; Kazuhiko Shindo; Tsutomu Sakai; Yutaka Saito

A case of spontaneous rupture of ureter with formation of urinoma due to ureteral stone, which was noticed in an infant with G syndrome, is described. Investigation revealed that the patient had bilateral vesicoureteric reflux. The urinary tract anomalies in G syndrome are discussed.

Segmental stenosis of ureter: A late complication of intra-arterial chemotherapy for bladder cancer

Pabitra Kumar Saha; Keisuke Taniguchi; N. Maekawa; Hiroshi Suzu; Shuji Yamashita; Hiroshi Kanetake; Yutaka Saito

A 54-year-old Japanese male was treated with a single shot of cisplatin-phosphatidylcholine-lipiodol (CPL) suspension dut to bladder tumour (stage T2N0M0). Seven months later, a right lower ureteral stenosis developed. The possible cause of ureteral stenosis due to intra-arterial chemotherapy is discussed.
