TAXONOMIC REVISION OF ALOYSIA (VERBENACEAE, LANTANEAE) IN SOUTH AMERICA

Nataly O'Leary; Patricia Lu-Irving; Pablo Moroni; Stephen Siedo

Abstract Aloysia Paláu is the third largest genus of tribe Lantaneae, after Lippia L. and Lantana L., in the Verbenaceae. Recent molecular phylogenetic studies have circumscribed genus Aloysia as 31 species, with the transfer of most species of Acantholippia Griseb. and the inclusion of the monotypic Xeroaloysia Tronc., as well as the exclusion of several North American Aloysia species that nest within a Lippia–Lantana clade. Newly circumscribed Aloysia are found mostly in South America, where the genus is represented by 28 species and six varieties. Only four Aloysia species are found in North America, A. coalcomana Siedo, A. macrostachya (Torr.) Moldenke, A. wrightii A. Heller, and A. gratissima (Gillies & Hook.) Tronc. var. gratissima, this last being the only taxon found in both North and South America. A taxonomic revision of the genus Aloysia for South America is provided with detailed morphological descriptions, as well as keys for taxonomic identification, illustrations or indication of iconography, and distribution and herbarium specimen lists. The genus Xeroaloysia Tronc. is here considered a synonym of Aloysia, and nine new taxonomic synonyms are here established. Lectotypification is designated for Verbena L. sect. Aloysioides Walp., and neotypification is designated for V. salviifolia Hook. & Arn.

A Contribution to the Nomenclature of Plantaginaceae: Typification of Thirteen Names Linked to the Flora of Argentina

Pablo Moroni; Nataly Cristina O'Leary

Abstract. During preparation of the taxonomic treatment of Plantaginaceae for the Flora Argentina project, several names were identified as needing typification to stabilize their nomenclature. As a result, lectotypes are designated for the following 13 names: Angelonia evitae Descole & Borsini, A. gardneri Hook., A. hassleriana Chodat, A. integerrima Spreng., A. salicariifolia Bonpl., Ourisia pratioides Diels, O. pygmaea Phil., Sibthorpia conspicua Diels, S. nectarifera Wedd., Veronica lepida Phil., V. peregrina L. var. laurentiana Vict. & J. Rousseau, V. polita Fr., and V. simpsonii Phil. Furthermore, supporting information about the type material of a name already typified by Rossow (O. fragrans Phil.) is provided.

Typification of Citharexylum (Verbenaceae) names based on the collections gathered by the Botanical Expedition to the Viceroyalty of Peru

Pablo Moroni; Nataly O’Leary

There has been considerable discussion on the history of the collections gathered by the Botanical Expedition to the Viceroyalty of Peru, members of which remained thirty-four years (1777–1811) collecting in the New World. Two species names in Rauvolfia (Apocynaceae), Rauvolfia flexuosa, the basionym of Citharexylum flexuosum since Don’s combination in 1831, and Rauvolfia macrophylla, now treated as a synonym of the former species name, were published by Ruiz and Pavón based on plant material they collected in Peru as well as material herborized by Tafalla, a subordinate who remained exploring in South America after the return of Ruiz and Pavón to Spain. A third species name, Citharexylum dentatum, was published by Don also based on Peruvian material collected by Tafalla. The resale and/or redistribution to other herbaria of a large part of the material gathered by the expedition members in South America has caused much confusion and hindered proper typification of these names. Based on thorough study of original material, original manuscripts, and pertinent literature, a critical review is provided and lectotypes are designated for the names R. flexuosa, R. macrophylla, and C. dentatum.
