Assessment of induction motor performance under supply voltage unbalance: A review

Abhishek Chauhan; Padmanabh Thakur; Dogga Raveendhra

Voltage unbalance crafts various ailing consequences on three phase induction motor (IM). In this paper, various existing methods for the assessment of the performance induction motor under the supply voltage unbalance have been critically reviewed to highlight their shortfalls. It has been revealed that, none of the existing methods are found proficient in the assessment of the performance of IM under the condition of supply voltage unbalanced. Further, various mitigation techniques, to reduced the cost of downtime associated with voltage unbalance, have been also discussed and it has been found that most of mitigation techniques are tentative approaches of several researchers which do not gain that much popularity, but fast-acting power electronic circuits like Static VAR Compensators (SVC) and active line conditioners are some of the incredible efforts which shows significant results.

Accurate performance assessment of IM with approximate current unbalance factor for NEMA definition

Shashi Bhushan Singh; Asheesh K. Singh; Padmanabh Thakur

The indices, namely, line voltage unbalance ratio (LVUR) and voltage unbalance factor (VUF), defined by NEMA and IEC, respectively, were highly recommended amongst the industrial engineers and researchers to quantify the condition of voltage unbalance. However, the existence of infinite voltage sets for fixed value of these indices produces erroneous estimation of voltage unbalance conditions. In this paper, three new indices, namely, maximum current deviation (MCD), combined maximum current deviation (CMCD), and effective current deviation (ECD), based on current measurement, are introduced. The proposed indices are used with LVUR to assess the effects of voltage unbalance. It is found that the information of proposed indices, along with LVUR, makes precise and unique assessment. Additionally, the various performance parameters are evaluated using these proposed indices and it is shown that the index ECD is more capable to reduce the variation in performance parameters for fixed value of LVUR. Hence, the index ECD is suggested to incorporate with LVUR to make unique and accurate assessment of voltage unbalance.

Stability analysis of FPGA based perturb and observe method MPPT charge controller for solar PV system

T. Saini; Dogga Raveendhra; Padmanabh Thakur

In recent years, renewable energy sources have become most popular day by day to generate electrical energy. Among all other types of renewable energy sources, solar is one of the best alternatives for conventional sources as it offers more advantages. This paper is mainly concentrated on the area of charge controller in solar PV power conditioning system. In this paper, a P&O method MPPT charge controller is designed and it is converted into digital domain to use in FPGA. Compared to analog controllers, digital controller offers more advantages like high accuracy, less effected by noise etc., MPPT charge controller is designed to perform 1) to convert the variable DC electrical energy which is coming from solar into fixed DC and 2) to track the maximum power from the solar PV module under all operating conditions. This fixed DC can be used to feed the DC loads or charge the batteries.

Reduced order modelling of linear time-invariant system using modified cuckoo search algorithm

Afzal Sikander; Padmanabh Thakur

In this paper modified cuckoo search (MCS) algorithm is considered to develop reduced order model (ROM) of higher-order linear time-invariant systems. Firstly, the MCS algorithm has been employed to minimize the integral square error (ISE) between original and proposed ROM to obtain its unknown coefficients. Five systems of different order are considered to obtain their reduced order model. Finally, various performance indices, such as ISE, integral of absolute and integral of time multiplied by absolute error, have been estimated to reveal the efficacy of the proposed model. Also, time and frequency response characteristics of original higher-order model are compared with the proposed MCS-based and some of other existing techniques-based ROM available in the literature. Furthermore, the results are compared in terms of time response specifications such as rise time (
