This study identified pre-entry variables related to course completion and noncompletion in university online distance education courses. Four hundred and sixty-four students who were enrolled in online distance education courses participated in the study. Discriminant analysis revealed six pre-entry variables were related to retention, including cumulative grade point average, class rank, number of previous courses completed online, searching the Internet training, operating systems and file management training, and Internet applications training. Results indicate prior educational experience and prior computer training may help distinguish between individuals who complete university online distance education courses and those who do not.

This study identified teaching styles of university interactive television instructors. The instructors (N = 203), representing nine Land Grant universities, completed a demographic survey and the Principles of Adult Learning Scale, a forty-four item teaching-style assessment instrument. Descriptive statistics revealed that interactive television instructors displayed behaviors representative of both learner-centered and teacher-centered styles, with a strong inclination toward a teacher-centered approach to the distance teaching process. Results indicate discrepancies between what research and theory suggest is the most appropriate distance teaching style and what is actually being employed in interactive television classrooms.

SummaryThere can be an untethered excitement connected with ever-expanding technologies and the vastness of educational opportunities that online learning generates. Yet, these new and exciting opportunities do not diminish the real-life concerns and issues that online professors face. Lack of planning often sets the stage for disastrous educational experiences. Problems with technology, the lack of professor guidance and the inability to build community, facilitate communication or humanize learning can sabotage educational efforts. Minimal or nonexistent evaluation can lead to a recycling of futile educational efforts in future online courses. Yet, you can circumvent these issues with proper planning-with the use of distance education plans
