The Case Study of an F/OSS Virtualization Platform Deployment and Quantitative Results

Panagiotis Stathopoulos; Alexandros Soumplis; Nikolaos Houssos

In this paper we present practical experiences and results from the deployment of an F/OSS virtualization platform. EKT’s (NDC) core IT infrastructure was transformed to a virtualized one, using exclusively F/OSS, while severe budget and timing constraints were in place. This migration was initiated in order to better cope with EKT’s services requirements, while accommodating at the same time the need for the in house development of a large scale open access infrastructure. The benefits derived from this migration were not only generic virtualization benefits, such as the quantifiable reduced power consumption and cost reduction through consolidation, but also F/OSS virtualization specific ones.

Ensuring the quality and interoperability of open cultural digital content: System architecture and scalability

Haris Georgiadis; Vangelis Banos; Ioanna-Ourania Stathopoulou; Panagiotis Stathopoulos; Nikos Houssos; Evi Sachini

We present an Open Cultural Digital Content Infrastructure, a platform providing a coherent suite of loosely-coupled services that aim to promote metadata quality in repositories and facilitate metadata data and digital content reuse. The key functions of the infrastructure are the aggregation of metadata and digital files and the automatic validation of metadata records and digital material for compliance with desired quality specifications. The system that has recently moved to production, is currently being employed to ensure the quality standards of the output of more than 70 projects that support Greek cultural heritage organisations and are funded by the European Union structural funds. These projects are expected to produce more than 1.5 million digitised and born-digital items accompanied with detailed metadata. The validation is based on a set of quality and interoperability specifications that have been developed for the purpose. In this paper we emphasize on Validator and Aggregator components and present experimental results of their scalability.

The infrastructure has been developed using an open source technology stack and tools and in particular reuses a number of components of the publicly available Europeana aggregator and portal software platform.

Shared service components infrastructure for enriching the user experience in electronic publications

Nikos Houssos; Panagiotis Stathopoulos; Ioanna-Ourania Stathopoulou; Andreas Kalaitzis; Alexandros Soumplis

A major requirement for electronic publishing systems is the availability of rich and intuitive mechanisms that enhance the user experience of viewing and searching online electronic documents such as books, monographs and journal papers. This work concerns a set of infrastructural components and their utilization for the creation of related coherent services and features for end users. We present a set of sophisticated platforms, tools and mechanisms that have been employed in real-life cases for implementing document viewing and full-text search features, shared among application instances of various types. Challenges encountered and the provided solutions are discussed.
